European Championships: Ukraine, Germany Score Gold Medals in Diving

BUDAPEST, Hungary, August 12. THE fourth and fifth gold medals were handed out this evening during diving competition at the European Championships with winners declared in the men's three-meter synchro and women's 10-meter individual events.

Ukraine's Illya Kvasha and Oleksiy Prygorov won the men's three-meter synchro gold this evening with a tally of 431.67 points. After a shaky first two rounds, the duo put together a dominant third through fifth rounds with 80-point dives before doing just enough in the sixth-and-final round to claim a 3.72-point triumph.

Germany's Stephan Feck and Patrick Hausding nearly did enough in the final three rounds to catch the Ukrainians, including an 86.13-point diving in the final round, but wound up with silver with a 427.95-point tally. Russia's Dmitry Sautin and Yury Kunakov took bronze with 410.43 points. Italy's Michele Benedetti and Tommaso Marconi also surpassed 400 points with a fourth-place 406.17.

Germany's Christin Steuer topped the women's 10-meter individual platform event with 354.50 points. After a tough first round, Steuer went to work in rounds two and three with the top dive of each round, and remained consistent enough for the win the rest of the way.

Italy's Noemi Batki took second-place with 343.80 points, while Russia's Yulia Koltunova placed third with 340.45 after pulling into the lead heading into the final round.
