IRVINE, California, August 7. IN an exciting finish, California's Dana Vollmer clinched the women's 100 free crown with a sub-54 effort at the U.S. Long Course Nationals.

Vollmer posted a time of 53.94 for the win to move into second in the world this year, and the fastest swimmer currently active for the rest of the season. Ranomi Kromowidjojo has the best time this year with a 53.44 from the Amsterdam Swim Cup, but has been sidelined the rest of the season due to illness. Vollmer leapfrogged Femke Heemskerk (54.19) to move from third overall to second.

Trojan's Jessica Hardy reacted well under the pressure of missing the Pan Pacific team in the 100 breast or 50 free the other night with a strong second-place effort of 54.14 to assure her spot on the squad. She also moved ahead of Heemskerk for third in the world.

California's Natalie Coughlin (54.34) and FAST's Kara Lynn Joyce (54.71) clinched the remaining U.S. 400 free relay spots at Pan Pacs with third and fourth. Coughlin improved to fifth in the world, while Joyce missed her top 10 ranked season best of 54.69 from the Los Angeles Grand Prix.

SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir (54.73), Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin (55.07), Athens Bulldog Morgan Scroggy (55.33) and FAST's Katie Hoff (55.42) rounded out the rest of the finale field. Palo Alto Stanford's Maddy Schaefer claimed the B final crown in 55.35.
