U.S. Long Course Nationals: Day Five Prelims – Coverage Sponsored by TYR

IRVINE, California, August 7. THE final day of qualifying is complete at the U.S. Long Course Nationals.

Women's 100 free
California's Dana Vollmer led the way in qualifying with a swift time of 54.60. Vollmer is the fastest American so far this year with a third-ranked season best of 54.30 from the Austin Grand Prix. Only Ranomi Kromowidjojo (53.44) and Femke Heemskerk (54.19) have been faster, and Kromowidjojo has withdrawn from the rest of the season due to illness.

SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir, always a sprint stalwart for the U.S., took second in prelims with a 54.60 to move to eighth in the world, while California's Natalie Coughlin qualified third in 54.67. That put her 10th in the world rankings heading into tonight.

Trojan's Jessica Hardy (54.74), FAST's Kara Lynn Joyce (54.88), Athens Bulldog Morgan Scroggy (54.96), FAST's Katie Hoff (55.28) and Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin (55.33) also made the championship final. Hardy tied her 14th-ranked season best from the Austin Grand Prix, while Joyce has been faster with a ninth-ranked 54.69 from the Los Angeles Grand Prix.

Men's 200 back
Four swimmers broke 1:59 in the distance backstroke event with FAST's Tyler Clary leading the way with a 1:58.43. The time moved Clary up to 11th in the world, while Longhorn's Aaron Peirsol took second overall in 1:58.70. Peirsol is the fastest American this year with a seventh-ranked season best of 1:58.11 from the Mare Nostrum circuit. Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte (1:58.86) and NBAC's Michael Phelps (1:58.95) also cleared 1:59 for the third and fourth seeds.

Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers (1:59.09), Daytona Beach's Rex Tullius (1:59.39), Tucson Ford's Cory Chitwood (1:59.75) and SwimMAC's Nick Thoman (2:00.09) also made their way into the championship final.

Women's 200 breast
Trojan's Rebecca Soni, who owns the top time in the world this year with a 2:21.41 from the Mare Nostrum circuit, eased through qualifying with a strong 2:24.85. Auburn's Micah Lawrence qualified a distant second in 2:26.29, while Trojan's Keri Hehn took third in 2:27.04 – both times are among the top 25 in the world this year with Lawrence moving into 14th. Hehn already has an 18th-ranked season best of 2:26.93 from the Santa Clara Grand Prix.

Santa Barbara's Katy Freeman (2:27.55), Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard (2:28.62), California's Caitlin Leverenz (2:28.63), Rattler's Andrea Kropp (2:28.63) and Wisconsin's Ashley Wanland (2:28.75) took the rest of the transfer spots into the A final.

Men's 200 breast
Longhorn's Eric Shanteau captured the top seed in the men's distance breaststroke with a 2:11.21. He'll be gunning for the 2:09 range as he's already turned in a fifth-ranked effort of 2:10.59 at the Charlotte Grand Prix. Ohio State's Elliott Keefer finished second with a time of 2:12.09 to move to 19th in the world, while Tucson Ford's Clark Burckle qualified third in 2:12.87. 100 breast victor Mike Alexandrov of Tucson Ford placed fourth in 2:12.95.

NBAC's Scott Spann (2:13.12), Auburn's Adam Klein (2:13.89), Wilton Y's Chris Higgins (2:14.14) and Tucson Ford's Carl Mickelson (2:14.62) also made the finale.
