IRVINE, California, August 4. JUST minutes after David Plummer touched out Aaron Peirsol in the men's 100 back, Allison Schmitt earned her own touch-out triumph in the women's 200 free over defending national champion Dana Vollmer.

Schmitt raced to a time of 1:56.84 for the win, moving to second in the world behind only Federica Pellegrini (1:56.23). Vollmer just missed taking third in the world rankings with a second-place time of 1:56.93. France's Camille Muffat split the two Americans with a third-ranked 1:56.92. Vollmer won last year's title with a 1:56.20, which would have ranked her top in the world.

FAST's Katie Hoff (1:57.50) and Athens Bulldog Morgan Scroggy (1:57.56) grabbed the two women's 800 free relay spots at Pan Pacs with third and fourth-place efforts. Hoff nipped her season best of 1:57.58 from the Los Angeles Grand Prix to jump ahead of Silke Lippok (1:57.51) in the rankings, while Scroggy's prelim time of 1:58.38 had ranked her 18th in the world. She now moved into the top 15.

ASK's Dagny Knutson (1:58.47), Palo Alto Stanford's Jasmine Tosky (1:58.63), Terrapins' Chelsea Chenault (1:59.41) and Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton (2:00.24) finished fifth through eighth.
