IRVINE, California, August 3. ANY question about either a groin or knee injury went by the wayside at the 250-meter mark of the men's 400 IM for Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte as he earned his four long course 400 IM title.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist rocketed to a time of 4:09.98 in the distance medley, chopping two seconds from the previous world best of 4:12.02 owned by Japan's Yuya Horihata. Lochte's previous long course national titles in the event came in 2005 (4:16.83), 2007 (4:13.55) and 2009 (4:06.40).

FAST's Tyler Clary initially gave Lochte something to think about, leading through the 250-meter mark, but faded fast to second in 4:14.12. That effort still put him sixth in the world. FAST's Robert Margalis touched third in 4:15.62 to earn a top 15 spot, while NBAC's Todd Patrick claimed fourth in 4:17.03.

Delaware's Andrew Gemmell (4:17.45), Poseidon's William Harris (4:19.59), Athens Bulldog Bill Cregar (4:20.78) and NBAC's Brennan Morris (4:22.64) also competed in the finale.
