IRVINE, California, August 3. TUCSON Ford's Christine Magnuson moved to the head of the pack in the women's 100 fly with a winning effort at the U.S. Long Course Nationals. Magnuson, who won last year with a 57.15, claimed the title again this year with a 57.32. That time clipped Dana Vollmer's previously top-ranked time of 57.39 in this year's world rankings.

Magnuson went out in under world and American record pace with a 26.82 at the 50. Vollmer went out in 26.85 en route to her 56.94 for the American record, while Sarah Sjostrom went out in 26.94 en route to the 56.06 global standard in 2009.

Vollmer claimed second overall with a 57.45 while swimming for California Aquatics. She just missed that season best of 57.39. SwimAtlanta's Kathleen Hersey took third in 58.15 to vault into sixth in the world rankings, while California's Natalie Coughlin wound up fourth in 58.31 for eighth in the world. Vollmer went out quick as well with a 26.92, while Coughlin was third at the turn with a 26.94.

The performance by Hersey has to be viewed as a major boost, considering her penchant for better performances in the 200 fly. A 2008 Olympian in the longer fly, Hersey firmly established herself as a leading contender to take top honors in that event.

The depth of the event proved impressive as well with NBAC's Felicia Lee finishing fifth in 58.44 (top 15 world ranking), and Trojan's Lyndsay De Paul taking sixth in 58.58 (top 25) to earn top 25 times.

In the B Final, Colorado Stars' Kelly Naze, 16, looked impressive with a smooth 58.79 for the win. Her previous personal best had been a 59.33 from prelims.
