USA Swimming Sectionals, Minneapolis: Fast Backstrokes Center Stage

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, July 22. THE second night of racing at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Minneapolis featured some swift times in the 100 backstroke events.

Wisconsin's Maggie Meyer dominated the women's 100 back with a 1:01.27, while Glenview's Olivia Smoliga touched second in 1:04.29. Westmont's Kelly Ryan placed third in 1:04.30. Minnetonka's David Plummer captured the men's 100 back in 55.04, while Wildcat's Dong Kim finished second in 57.58. Hutchinson's Cole Bateman earned third in 58.13.

Wildcat's Kate Shumway topped the women's 200 free in 2:04.49, while Wisconsin's Danielle Beckwith finished second in 2:05.19. Minnesota's Hannah Whitehead claimed third in 2:06.03. Minnesota's Stephen Miller overtook New Trier's Samuel Metz, 1:53.23 to 1:53.72, in the men's 200 free. Wildcat's John Frutiger touched third in 1:53.90.

Elmbrook's Kelsey Hojan Clark won the women's 400 IM in 4:57.44, while Aquajet Hailey Szews took second in 4:59.31. Academy Bullet Rebecca Mann, 12, cleared 5:00 with a third-place time of 4:59.90. Peoria Area's Matt Elliott snatched the men's 400 IM title in 4:30.64. Wisconsin's Samuel Rowan took second in 4:33.69, while Wildcat's Peter Park claimed third in 4:35.69.
