Cal State East Bay Hires Ben Loorz as Head Women’s Coach

HAYWARD, California, June 21. DIRECTOR of Athletics Debby De Angelis announced the hiring of Ben Loorz as Cal State East Bay's new head women's swimming coach on Friday. An experienced coach across all levels of swimming, Loorz joins the Pioneer coaching staff from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he has served as an assistant coach for the past three years. Loorz will take over for longtime CSUEB Head Coach Anthony Garcia, who announced his retirement in May.

"We are pleased to bring an energetic Division I assistant to our pool to build our women's swimming program in Division II," De Angelis said. "Ben projects to bring a new spirit to Pioneer Pool with concern for our student-athlete welfare and academic successes combined with a competitive program."

As an assistant at UNLV, Loorz was responsible for recruiting and alumni relations in addition to his regular coaching duties for both the men and women's teams. During his time with the Rebels, Loorz brought two top-50 student-athletes to UNLV, helped coach the men to three consecutive Mountain West Conference (MWC) championships and coached multiple swimmers to MWC records and individual championships. In his duties Director of Alumni Relations, Loorz led a fundraising campaign that led to the construction of a new record board at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium.

During his tenure at UNLV, Rebel swimmers secured 11 women's and 43 men's individual and relay conference titles. With his help, UNLV also collected five Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Year awards and one All-America certificate.

"I believe Ben Loorz can work with our current student athletes as well as recruit the next generation of Pioneer swimmers to build competitive success in the Pacific Coast Swimming and Diving Conference and Division II," De Angelis said.

Prior to his time at UNLV, Loorz spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for University of Utah from 2005-07. During his time at Utah, the Ute women captured the 2006 conference title, while Loorz also coached a U.S. National qualifier and a program record holder. Loorz also has experience at the community college, club, masters and camp levels, coaching swimmers of all ages since 1996.

"Working at the club and the collegiate level in both northern and southern California has given me a deep knowledge of swimming in the region," Loorz. "I am excited to coach a program that will offer a top-notch academic and athletic experience for the area's student-athletes."

Loorz swam collegiately at American River College in Sacramento after graduating Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music from University of Southern California in 1999. He also obtained a Master of Science in Communication from Utah in 2008. Loorz is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and has completed his Level 3 certification.

The Northern California native has also done extensive work in the community working as a counselor at a group home and school in San Leandro, serving as the community organizer for the Imagination Library in Salt Lake City and teaching swim lessons to boys from a local group home in the East Bay.

"The diversity of the student body, affordable tuition, and highly ranked degree programs at Cal State East Bay make it a very attractive institution," Loorz said. "The Bay Area is just a great part of the world and a hotbed of swimming activity. The growth potential of this program is significant, and I am looking forward to helping the program engage with the swimming, campus, and East Bay communities."
