China’s Qi Breaks 200m Breaststroke World Record

HUANGZHOU, China. April 16. CHINA'S Qi Hui, 16, set a world record of 2:22.99 in the women's 200 meter breaststroke at the Chinese swimming championships today in Huangzhou.

Qi, who made her international debut at the Goodwill Games in 1998, broke the previous world record of 2:23.64 set by South African Penny Heyns in Sydney at the Pan Pacific Championships in August 1999. Earlier this year she set a world record in the short course version of this event.

Qi split 33.37 at the 50, 1:10.00 at the 100, and 1:46.64 at the 150 before touching in 2:22.99.

At the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Qi finished fourth, just one-hundredth of a second behind the bronze medalist, Amanda Beard of the USA.
