Sarah Price Lowers Commonwealth Record in the 100m Back at British Nationals

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, April 12. BACKSTROKER Sarah Price set her second Comonwealth-British record in the 100 in as many tries here today during the third day of the British Nationals-World Championship Trials.

The 21-year-old dorsal specialist raced to a 1:01.32 clocking to gain a spot on the team that will compete this July in Fukuoka, breaking her old Commonwealth-National standard of 1:01.36 set just 24 hours earlier.

Don't look now, but the Queen's favorite subjects lead the world in two women's races — and are tied for the lead in a third.

Alison Sheppard's 25.07 Commonwealth-GBR record in the 50 ranks her No. 1 globally for the year, as does Rebecca Cooke's 16:21.75 1500 clocking. That latter time is also a British national standard, breaking her old mark of 16:28.49 from last year's spring U.S. Nationals in Federal Way.

Price's time equals this year's No. 1 world mark of 1:01.32 by America's Natalie Coughlin from last month's U.S. Trials. Probably not since the days of Plymouth Rock nearly 400 years ago have so many British women occupied such a lofty status.

However, neither Price nor Coughlin will be the favorite at Fukuoka. That honor will likely go to defending Olympic champ Diana Mocanu of Romania, whose 1:00.21 at Sydney is the European record and No. 2 performance all-time.

Japan's Mai Nakamura will also be in the hunt for Fukuoka gold. She splashed to a 1:00.55 at Sydney to win the silver, and will swim in her country's national championships-WCTs starting next week. Early last month Nakamura broke the world sc meters record in the 100 back.

Butterflyer Georgina Lee, who competed this past season for Coach Steve Collins' SMU Mustangs, knocked her British 100 record down to 1:00.37 but has still to qualify for the World Championships.

On the men's side, breaststroker Darren Mew went a pr 1:01.52 to win the 100, but missed Nick Gillingham's British record of 1:01.32 from a decade ago. Paul Palmer, who won the 400 free in a pedestrian (for him ) 3:51+, was fastest qualifier in the 200 free semis with a 1:48.85. His British record is 1:48.02.
