Mel Zajac Jr. International: Dana Vollmer Concludes Fantastic Meet With Record, Brent Hayden Post Mark As Well

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 30. TWO more meet records went into the books during the final night of long course meter swimming at the Mel Zajac Jr. International.

Dana Vollmer, who is second in the world in the women's 100 free with a 54.30 from Austin in March, threw down a meet record tonight with a scorching 54.94. That performance wiped out the 55.05 set by Julia Wilkinson back in 2008. Wilkinson, meanwhile, settled for second in 56.25, while Seanna Mitchelle took third in 56.83.

Brent Hayden turned in the second meet record of the night with a strong time of 49.78 in the men's 100 free. That effort eclipsed the 49.81 set by Colin Russell in 2008. Hayden had already moved to fourth in the world this year with a 48.56 at the Canadian Long Course Nationals in April. Tommy Gossland took second in 51.97, while Kyle Troskot earned third in 52.39.

Andie Taylor earned the victory in the women's 800 free with a time of 8:46.68. Danielle Beckwith finished a distant second in 8:55.37, while Sherry Liu wound up third in 9:01.27. Tianna Rissling followed in the women's 50 breast with a winning 32.38. Ashley Wanland touched second in 32.68, while Annamay Pierse placed third in 32.72. Scott Dickens then turned in 28.91 to win the men's 50 breast. Chun Yan Wong took second in 29.03, while Jason Block wound up third in 29.06.

MacKenzie Downing topped the women's 200 fly in 2:12.72, while Taylor claimed her second podium of the night with a second-place time of 2:14.44. Jessica Johnson took third in 2:17.35. Stefan Hirniak claimed the men's 200 fly title in 2:00.75. Thomas Jobin finished second in 2:02.51, while Kai Wai Wong grabbed third in 2:04.99.

Chantal Vanlandeghem emerged victorious from a close contest in the women's 100 back. Vandlandeghem, 16, clocked a 1:03.08 for the win. Katy Murdoch earned second in 1:03.31, while Hilary Caldwell placed third in 1:03.45. Daniel Arnamnart easily won the men's 100 back in 56.02. Pascal Wollach touched second in 57.69, while Jake Tapp claimed third in 59.09.

In a close finish, Keegan Zanatta touched out Kier Maitland, 15:43.33 to 15:43.37, in the men's 1500 free. Alec Page completed the podium in 16:10.94.

Samantha Corea, Hanna Pierse, Erin Miller and Laura Sze won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:18.47, while Kevin Chu, Davis Wuolle, Kevin Bruce and Matt Godbeer claimed the men's 400 medley relay in 3:59.43.
