Latin Cup: Kristel Kobrich Posts Swift 800 Free, Several Meet Records Tumble

MAR DE PLATA, Argentina, May 22. CHILE's Kristel Kobrich put on a show in the women's 800 free during the second day of long course meter swimming at the Latin Cup.

Kobrich proved she's one of the top distance swimmers in the world with an 8:34.68 to win the women's 800 free. Not only did she destroy the meet record of 8:47.23 set by Eider Santamaria in 2008, she also vaulted up to 13th in the world rankings. Italy's Stefania Pirozzi finished a distant second in 8:48.67, while Spain's Sara Canas took third in 8:54.76.

Brazil's Leonardo De Deus won the men's 200 back in 2:01.21, while Italy's Michele Malerba touched second in 2:02.65. Spain's Rufino Regueira earned third in 2:03.65. De Deus lowered the Latin Cup mark previously set by Leonardo Guedes with a 2:02.26 in 2008.

Paraguay's Benjamin Hockin snared the men's 200 free title in 1:49.97, downing the Latin Cup mark of 1:50.50 set by Jose Alonso in 2008. Italy's Alex Di Giorgio (1:50.64) and Venezuela's Cristian Quintero (1:51.61) rounded out the top three.

Italy's Chiara Masini Luccetti crushed the meet record in the women's 200 free with a 2:00.54. Silvia Pagliarini owned the previous mark with a 2:04.14 back in 2004. Brazil's Sarah Correa touched second in 2:04.56, while Spain's Ana Ruiz earned third in 2:07.27.

Italy's Andrea Toniato topped the men's 50 breast in 28.54, while Brazil's Raphael Rodrigues took second in 28.98. Uruguay's Martin Melconian wound up third in 29.20. Italy's Michela Guzzetti claimed the women's 50 breast in 32.32. Brazil's Alessandra Marchioro (32.72) and Spain's Teresa Gutierrez (35.32) completed the podium.

Argentina's Georgina Bardach touched out Italy's Valentina Lucconi, 2:17.31 to 2:17.34, in the women's 200 back. Venezuela's Elimar Barrios finished third in 2:18.54.

Brazil's Martins Hemrique claimed the men's 100 fly in 54.76, while Hockin earned his second podium with a second-place 54.91. Italy's Federico Bossolin placed third in 54.93. Italy's Silvia Di Pietro won the women's 100 fly in 1:00.93. Venezuela's Elimar Barrios took second in 1:01.85, while Colombia's Maria Quinteros finished third in 1:03.87.

Italy's Matteo Pelizzari captured the men's 400 IM title in 4:25.70. Brazil's Henrique Rodrigues touched second in 4:28.93, while Ecuador's Esteban Enderica finished third in 4:30.32.
