Masters Short Course Yards National Records Fall in Mission Viejo

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 17. AT the 2010 Southwest Zone Championships, held May 7-9 in Mission Viejo, Calif., nine short course yards individual national records were broken.

Frank Piemme was responsible for four of those records, all coming in the 85-89 age group. Piemme swam a 2:50.54 in the 200 free, erasing Jim Eubank's record of 2:55.96. On the way to setting a national record of 16:28.80 in the 1000 free — breaking Willard Lamb's record of 16:30.97 — Piemme also broke Lamb's national record of 8:01.16 in the 500 free with a 7:54.01. Piemme wrapped up his meet with a 1:36.02, beating Aldo da Rosa's national record of 1:36.99. Piemme will have a chance to lower the 200 free record again, when he swims at the USMS short course nationals this week in Atlanta.

Alex Kostich set three records in the 40-44 age group. His 500 free time of 4:39.86 erased Dennis Baker's 4:41.58 from the record books. Kostich also swam a 9:32.66 in the 1000 free, taking down Jeff Erwin's 9:37.46. Another Erwin record fell when Kostich posted a 15:51.52 in the 1650 free, bettering Erwin's mark of 16:01.00.

Laura Val and Jackie Marr were responsible for one national record each. Val, one of Swimming World's World Masters Swimmers of the Year, posted a 5:03.92 in the 400 IM for the 55-59 age group, bettering her own mark of 5:04.00. Marr swam a 6:15.25 in the 400 IM for the 65-69 age group, smashing Daniela Barnea's record of 6:22.17. Marr will also have another opportunity to lower her record this week when she competes at the USMS nationals.

Notably, 1984 Olympian Rich Saeger just missed out on a national record in the 200 free for the 45-49 age group when he swam a 1:43.25. The record is held by Keith Switzer with a 1:43.24.
