Misty Hyman Named Top Collegiate Female Athlete for Swimming and Diving -- April 5, 2001 Misty can not believe she won gold.

SAN DIEGO, April 5. STANFORD'S Misty Hyman, the 2001 NCAA champion in the 200 yard butterfly and a member of two NCAA record-setting relay teams (200 and 400 yard medley relays), has been named the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for the 2000-2001 collegiate year, according to the results of national balloting among NCAA-member schools. As a freshman, Hyman also won the 1997-98 Honda Award for swimming and diving.

As the Honda Award winner for swimming and diving, Hyman, a senior from Phoenix, Arizona (Shadow Mountain High School) earned seven All-American honorss at the NCAA meet to become only the second woman swimmer in Stanford history to earn the maximum 28 All-American honors over four years.

She is a 12-time NCAA champion. Hyman also had 16 first-place finishes and five second-place finishes in dual meets. At the Pac-10 Championships, Hyman set conference records in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly, won the 100 backstroke (53.52) and was a member of her school's record-setting relay teams in the 400 medley and 800 free.

Hyman won gold in the 200m butterfly at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney in one of the most stunning upsets in Olympic history. Her time of 2:05.88, the second fastest ever, broke Mary T. Meagher's 19 year-old American record.

An international relations major, Misty has a 3.25 grade point average.

Previous Honda award winners for swimming and diving include Stanford's Jenny Thompson (1995), Summer Sanders (1992) and Janet Evans (1990); Columbia's Cristina Teuscher (2000); California's Mary T. Meagher (1985, 87); Florida's Tracy Caulkins (1982-83-84); and Texas' Jill Sterkel (1980, 81).
