Italian Long Course Nationals: Distance Freestylers Put Up Ranked Times

RICCIONE, Italy, April 15. THE first night of swimming at the Italian Long Course Nationals produced some world-ranked times in the distance freestyle events.

Samuel Pizzetti earned the fastest time in the world this year in the men's 800 free with a 7:51.42, beating the previous world best by more than a second. Canada's Ryan Cochrane (7:53.90) owned that previous mark. Federico Colbertaldo touched second in 7:54.20, while Andrea Busato finished third in 7:58.12.

Giorgia Consiglio took home the women's 1500 free title in 16:24.60 becoming the third fastest in the world in the early goings of this event this year. Alessia Filippi finished a surprising second to Consiglio in 16:30.21. Martina De Memme placed third in 16:30.62.

Filippo Magnini pocketed the men's 200 free title in 1:48.18 to move up to 12th in the world rankings this year. Gianluca Maglia placed second in 1:48.38, within the top 15 in the world, while Marco Belotti completed the podium in 1:48.61.

Elena Gemo grabbed the women's 100 back crown in 1:02.03, while Arianna Barbieri touched second in 1:02.40. Elisa Apostoli wound up third in 1:02.81. Michela Guzzetti won the women's 50 breast in 32.19. Sara Damiani (32.27) and Martina Carraro (32.45) rounded out the top three.

Mattia Nalesso touched out Paolo Facchinelli, 24.19 to 24.22, in the men's 50 fly. Stefano Maur Pizzamiglio touched third overall in 24.48. Silvia Di Pietro earned the women's 50 free crown in 25.79. Silvia Copetta (26.01) and Erika Ferraioli (26.24) took second and third.

Damiano Lestingi overtook Sebastiano Ranfagni in the men's 200 back, 1:58.04 to 1:58.36. Mattia Aversa touched third in 1:59.51. Alessia Polieri earned the women's 400 IM title in 4:48.56. Francesca Aceto finished second in 4:50.33, while Susanna Negri earned third in 4:50.45.

Federico Turrini (2:01.57), Luca Angelo Dioli (2:02.63) and Davide Cova (2:03.49) finished atop the podium during the men's 200 IM.
