Canadian Spring Nationals/Pan Pacific Championships: Ryan Cochrane Remains on Fire

MONTREAL, Quebec, April 3. SEVERAL more top 10 times in the world were posted on the scoreboard at the Canadian Spring Nationals, which serve as Canada's Pan Pacific Championships Trials. The top effort, however, came in the men's distance event.

Ryan Cochrane ripped off a 7:53.90 to win the men's 800 free. That effort improved upon his previous world best time this year of 7:55.27. The time put some distance ahead of Robert Hurley's 7:55.36 from last month in Australia. Jeremy Bagshaw (8:09.80) and Sean Penhale (8:14.32) finished second and third.

Annamay Pierse checked in with a 2:24.76 in the women's 200 breast. That performance jumped her up to third in the world this year behind Rebecca Soni (2:22.91) and Leisel Jones (2:23.45). Martha McCabe placed second in 2:25.44, which now moved her up to fifth in the world this year. Ashley McGregor wound up third overall in 2:27.82.

Erica Morningstar cruised to victory in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:14.19. The effort is among the top 10 in the world this year. Sinead Russell (2:15.44) and Stephanie Horner (2:15.79) battled for second. Brian Johns claimed the men's 200 IM title in 2:00.71. The swim moved him ahead of Thomas Fraser-Holmes' seventh-best time of the year of 2:00.84.

Brent Hayden moved among the top 10 in the world in the men's 50 free this year with a 22.50 for the win. Octavian Petre touched second in 23.18, while Christopher Manning earned third in 23.26.

Victoria Poon touched in 25.46 to capture the women's 50 free crown. Jennifer Beckberger took second in 25.78, while Chantal Vanlandeghem picked up third in 25.83. Scott Dickens topped the men's 200 breast in 2:15.37. Warren Barnes placed second in 2:16.37, while Paul Kornfeld wound up third in 2:17.11.

Savannah King capped the night with a 16:51.60 to win the women's 1500 free title. Natalie Sacco (16:56.90) and Karyn Jewell (16:57.28) completed the top three.
