NCAA Division I Men’s Championships: Texas’ Austin Surhoff Touches Out Florida’s Shaune Fraser in 200 IM

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 26. ANOTHER close call occurred in the 200 IM following the .01 margin in the 500 free. Texas' Austin Surhoff picked up big points for his squad with a touch out triumph over Florida's Shaune Fraser.

Surhoff clocked in at 1:42.95 for the win, giving Texas only its second win ever in the event. Nate Dusing was the first Longhorn to win the 200 IM with a 1:42.85 back in 2001. He knocked off Florida's Shaune Fraser by a mere .04 as Fraser touched second in 1:42.99.

"It's just crazy; I can't process winning, especially in the heat I was in," Surhoff said. "All those crazy-good underclassmen – Fraser, Ricky – what a group. I didn't honestly know if I would hang with them. I just wanted to do what I could do for Texas."

While close, it's not the smallest margin of victory. Back in 1975, Indiana's Fred Tyler and Leroy Engstrand of Tennessee technically tied with matching times of 1:50.628. Back then, judges could break a tie, and the officials gave Tyler the title.

California's Martin Liivamagi wound up third overall in 1:43.05, also just .06 back from Fraser's second-place effort.

Notably, Hershey's David Nolan, who set the national high school record in this event earlier this month with a 1:43.43, would have tied Omar Pinzon for fourth. Nolan is just a junior, and still has a year to develop in high school. Thanks for Swimming World senior writer John Lohn for pointing out Nolan reference.

Florida moved into first with 88 points, while Texas held second with 71 points. Michigan (64), California (60) and Arizona (57) made up the rest of the top five.
