USA Swimming Sectionals, Indianapolis: Courtney Bartholomew, Eric Ress Lower Sectional Records

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 25. THE first day of long course meter action at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Indianapolis produced a pair of sectional records.

Michigan's Courtney Bartholomew crushed the sectional record in the women's 200 back with 2:13.91 during prelims. That swim far surpassed the 2:17.80 set by Erin Forster back in 2002. Bartholomew then won the event in 2:14.01. Carmel's Patricia Regan cleared the former record with a second-place 2:16.56, while Colleen Drew finished third in 2:17.86. IU's Eric Ress blasted a sectional record in the men's 200 back with a 2:01.19. That performance smashed the 2:04.21 clocked by Nick Thoman in 2004. James Barbiere took second in 2:07.55, while Carmel's Nik Astashinsky wound up third in 2:08.39.

Carmel's Lauren Jordan claimed the women's 800 free title in 8:56.58, while Berkeley's Lauren Ross finished second in 8:58.93. Berkeley's Kelly Pontecorvo rounded out the top three in 9:01.35. Counsilman's Andy Mueller topped the men's 1500 free in 16:08.53, while Indiana's Illya Larin touched second in 16:08.89. Berkeley's Paul Soley took third in 16:18.29.

Michigan's Emily Bos topped the women's 50 free in 26.39, while Greater Columbus' Grace Finnegan finished second in 26.78. Mason Manta Rays' Dani Barbiea placed third in 26.81. IU swept the top four in the men's 50 free with Bryan Chovanec winning in 23.42. Ante Zoricic (23.62), Daniel Kanorr (23.70) and Titus Knight (24.01) went 1-2-3-4 under the IU banner.

Center Grove's Emma Schoettmer claimed the women's 200 breast in 2:33.66, while Oakland Live Y'er Megan Fox finished second in 2:38.58. IU's Katelyn Ishee touched third in 2:39.81. Carmel's John Stuy captured the men's 200 breast in 2:22.87 with Oakland Live Y'er Matthew McNamara finished second in 2:23.26. IU's Samuel Trahin rounded out the top three in 2:23.33.

Carmel's Margaret Ramsey, Patricia Regan, Rhiannon Sheets and Lauren Jordan won the women's 800 free relay in 8:32.48.
