FLASH!!! Phelps Breaks World Record in 200m Fly -- March 30, 2001

AUSTIN, Texas, March 30. FIFTEEN year-old Michael Phelps became the youngest American man ever to set a world swimming record, when he blasted the global standard in the 200 meter butterfly, defeating former world record-holder and 2000 Olympic champion, Tom Malchow, in the process.

The 6'4" Phelps, who swims for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, clocked 1:54.92, breaking Malchow's mark of 1:55.18 set last June in Charlotte, North Carolina. Malchow, who led through the first 175 meters, clocked 1:55.46.

Phelps split: 26.47, 55.61, 1:25.04, 1;54.92
Malchow split: 25.69, 55.04, 1:24.60, 1:55.46
