BUFFALO, New York, March 13. WESTERVILLE's Austin Staab kept on rolling at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Buffalo with a trio of pool, meet records on the third day of competition. The meet is being held in short course yard format.
Staab blazed the men's 50 free with a sterling time of 19.23. That swim demolished the pool record of 19.69 set by Camilo Becerra in 2003. Staab had already lowered the meet record with a 20.16 during prelims, downing the 20.72 set by Christopher Pai also in 2003. Clarence's Charles Rommell took second in 21.13, while Cougar's Nicolas Fink picked up third in 21.16.
Stabb doubled up with a strong 46.83 to win the men's 100 back – lowering his pool and meet marks. During prelims, he clocked a 48.00, which clipped the pool record of 48.19 set by Rodrigo Ferreira in 2004. The clocking also destroyed the meet record of 49.63 set by Michael Ross in 2006. Penn State's Patrick Schirk finished second in 49.32, while Hamden's Connor Maher placed third in 50.88.
Staab also posted a swift time of 1:43.55 during prelims of the men's 200 fly. That performance smashed the pool and meet records. Fernando Alves held the previous facility standard with a 1:47.44 set in 2004, while Brendan Neligan owned the old meet record with a 1:49.00 set in 2001. Peddie's Nimrod Hayet won the title in finals with a 1:48.56, while Peddie's Connor Signorin (1:50.07) and Fairport's Gregory Danner (1:51.01) completed the top three.
Penn State's Kelly Nelson clocked a time of 2:00.07 to win the women's 200 fly. That performance cleared the pool record of 2:00.62 set by Cindy Ong in 2004. Magnus' Maggie D'Innocenzo placed second in 2:02.11, while SoNoCo's Dana Grindall claimed third in 2:03.66. Peddie's Carolyn Fittin touched first in the women's 50 free with a 23.31. Tonawanda's Marissa Dressel placed second in 23.91, while Peddie's Mary Mucciarone finished third in 23.92.
Central Connecticut's Faith Martin hit the wall in 2:17.28 to win the women's 200 breast. Star's Emily Kopas, 13, took second in 2:18.54, while Sweet Home's Paige Gutowski placed third in 2:22.89. Fink earned his second podium of the night with a 2:04.21 to win the men's 200 breast. Hayet touched just behind in second with a 2:04.29, while Lansing Cats' John Nord took third in 2:07.13.
Cougar's Danielle Romain set the pool record in the women's 100 back with a 55.59. That time downed the 56.33 set by Erika Newell back in 2005. Magnus' Rachel Moore finished second in 55.87 also under the old record, while teammate Erica Belcher wound up third in 56.28.
SoNoCo's Alicia Mathieu cruised to victory in the women's 500 free with a 4:50.37. Eastern Express' Victoria Cassidy took second in 4:54.00, while D'Innocenzo grabbed third in 4:55.57. Signorin turned in a 4:26.65 to win the men's 500 free. Berkeley's Paul Nolle (4:30.40) and Squids' Liam Egan, 13, (4:33.82) completed the podium.
In relay action, Cougar's Romain, Deirdre Esposito, Lauren Buckworth and Rebecca Fleming won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:46.85. Fairport's Todd Winchell, Jeffrey Kaemmerlen, Erik Scheemaker and William Brophy topped the men's 200 medley relay in 1:34.29.
Peddie's Fittin, Mucciarone, Laura Loughran and Kendese Nangle claimed the women's 400 free relay with a 3:27.40. Teammates Signorin, Maxwell Wilde, Peter Fittin and Hayet took home the men's 400 free relay with a 3:06.50.
