Michael Phelps Sets Lifetime Best in 200 IM at Maryland State Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, March 6. AFTER what he called a disappointing swim in the men's 400-yard IM last night at the Maryland State Championships, Michael Phelps scared the American record in the men's 200-yard IM with a personal-best effort.

Phelps turned in a blazing fast time of 1:40.58 in the event, finishing just a half-second back of Ryan Lochte's American record of 1:40.08. Phelps' previous best time heading into tonight had been a 1:41.30 clocked while with Club Wolverine at the 2006 Short Course Championships. Phelps improved his third-best spot behind only Lochte and Bradley Ally (1:40.49) in the event.

Phelps will be looking towards his American record in the men's 200-yard fly tomorrow as he completes his time at the Maryland State Championships. Phelps holds the record with a 1:39.70 set in 2006.
