International Swim Meet of Lyon: Randall Bal, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Wendy Van Der Zanden Shine

LYON, France, March 6. THE second day of long course meter action at the International Swim Meet held in Lyon produced some fast times, including world bests so far this year.

After setting the meet record in prelims of the men's 50 back with a 25.33, Randall Bal of the U.S. returned with an ever faster swim during finals. Bal won the sprint back event with a 25.15, which puts him as the third-fastest swimmer this year. Matt Grevers clocked a 24.72 as a relay leadoff last night at the Austin Grand Prix, which is faster than what had been the world record heading into the techsuit era. Liam Tancock also cleared 25 second this year with a 24.92 at the Duel in the Pool between Germany and Great Britain last month. Meanwhile, Matteo Giordano (26.38) and Bastiaan Lijesen (26.46) completed the podium today.

Wendy Van Der Zanden clocked a meet record in the women's 100 back with a 1:02.94, while Sharon Van Rouwendaal took second in 1:03.88. Valentina De Nardi picked up third in 1:04.06. Van Der Zanden doubled in the women's 50 back with a 29.71 to 29.78 touch out triumph over De Nardi. Van Rouwendaal placed third in 30.00.

The Netherlands' Ranomi Kromowidjojo turned in the fastest time in the world this year with a 54.27 in the women's 100 free. Teammate Inge Dekker finished second in 55.68, while Italy's Renata Spagnolo placed third in 56.84. Kromowidjojo doubled up in the women's 50 free with a 24.93. That time clipped Fran Halsall's 24.94 from February as the fastest time in the world thus far this year. Hinkelien Schreuder took second in 25.18, while Inge Dekker placed third in 25.50. The Netherlands swept the top four with Clarissa Van Rheenen finished fourth in 26.70.

Dekker clinched the women's 50 fly title in 26.53, while Cristina Maccagnola (27.54) and Schreuder (27.70) finished second and third. Romain Sassot set a meet record in the men's 50 fly with a 24.49, while Joeri Verlinden finished second in 24.62. Marco Pelizzon tied for third with Andrew Mayor with matching 25.01s.

Ginevra Ferronetti claimed the women's 200 breast title in 2:34.55, while Adele Bolla took second in 2:36.72. Jessica Thielman wound up third in 2:44.64. Ferronetti doubled up with a 33.20 in the women's 50 breast. Veronica Panattoni earned second in 33.82, while Luisa Trombetti took third in 34.82.

Jakob Johann Sveinsson touched out Marco Sommaripa, 1:03.03 to 1:03.12, for the men's 100 breast crown. Igor Borysik finished a close third in 1:03.33. Sommaripa turned the tables in the men's 50 breast, 28.85 to 28.87, over Sveinsson. Niccolo Ossola finished third in 29.47.

Lucy Gordon topped the women's 200 IM in 2:19.90, while Francesca Aceto took second in 2:20.68. Trombetti finished third in 2:21.96. Luca Dioli followed with a 4:23.04 to win the men's 400 IM. Anthony Pannier placed second in 4:26.56, while Lewis Wiseman Ord touched third in 4:41.42.

Damiano Lestingi took home the men's 200 back crown in 2:02.05, while Matteo Giordano finished second in 2:02.88. Michele Malerba grabbed third in 2:03.35. Emanuela Albenzi snagged the women's 200 fly in 2:15.05, while Gordon finished a distant second in 2:20.51. Phoebe Lenderyou rounded out the podium in 2:22.06. Verlinden clocked a 53.94 to win the men's 100 fly. Mayor (54.31) and Romain Sassot (54.50) finished second and third.

Flavia Zoccari garnered the women's 400 free title in 4:18.53, while Thielman pocketed her second podium of the day with a 4:20.93. Chiara Giacone finished third in 4:21.44. Italy's Gianluca Maglia snared the men's 200 free title in 1:49.69. Teammate Cesare Sciocchetti (1:50.73) and Job Kienhuis (1:52.94) rounded out the top three.

Marco Orsi won the men's 50 free in 22.60, while Luca Dotto finished second in 22.98. David Maitre placed third in 23.10.
