HOBART, Tasmania, Australia. March 25. THERE were few surprises on Day Two of the 2001 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships, beeing held on this island state southeast of mainland Australia. The meet also serves as the selection meet for the 2001 World Championships in Japan.

Here's a rundown of today's events:

DAY TWO – FINALS

Men's 50m Freestyle Final
Reigning title holder, Brett Hawke made it back-to-back national titles winning the final in 22.58 with Olympians Ashley Callus and Michael Klim dead-heating for second in 22.71. Hawke admitted that he has had difficulty refocusing since the Olympics. "I really struggled with this preparation so the swim felt great," he said after the race. Rounding out the top eight were David Jenkins (22.80), Stephen Goudie (23.06), Todd Pearson (23.18), Adam Pine (23.28) and Nathan Rickard (23.35).

Women's 200m Butterfly Final
Olympic triple medallist, Petria Thomas is finally able to put her name on the national title winners list which has been dominated by Susie O’Neill for the past nine years – Thomas had, in fact, finished with the silver medal in this event for the past five years. Her time of 2:07.42 put her well clear of second place-getter, local Tasmanian swimmer, Nicole Hunter who swam a personal best time of 2:12.40 to just out-touch young NSW swimmer, Felicity Galvez (2:12.42). Completing the final were Lara Davenport (2:13.74), Kate Hanna (2:14.62), Heidi Crawford (2:14.82), Sarah Windsor (2:16.20) and Linda McKenzie (2:17.01)

White’s time takes her to number three on the Australian all-time list. "I’m so happy. It is only 0.01 under a 1:08 but it makes all the difference," she said after the race. Victoria’s Brooke Hanson was third in yet another personal best time of 1:09.29. Completing the final eight were Sarah Kasoulis (1:11.75), Brooke Martin (1:12.17), Rebekah Rychvalsky (1:12.17), Katie Clewett (1:12.54) and Angela Kan (1:12.56).
