Mid-American Championships: Day Four

OXFORD, Ohio, February 27. THE University of Toledo won the MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship for the first time in school history. The Rockets, led by sixth-year head coach Lars Jorgenson, won the MAC Championship with a total score of 670.5 points. Toledo entered the MAC Championship with a 11-2 record on the year, including 7-0 in the MAC. The Rockets were able to hold off last year's MAC Champion and this year's host, Miami University, as the RedHawks finished second with 572 points. Ohio (527) and Eastern Michigan (453.5) finished third and fourth respectfully, while Akron and Buffalo tied for fifth place with 392 points.

Opening the evening was the 1650 Yard Freestyle and Toledo's Jacy Dyer set a MAC, Meet and Pool record with a time of 16:21.74. Akron's Kendall Karchner followed by winning the 200 Yard Backstroke hitting the wall with a time of 1:57.76. In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Buffalo's Caroline Simmons edged out the win with a time of 49.69 over Ohio's Chelsey Bower with a time of 49.70.

Miami junior Kelsey Vehr continued her strong showing by winning he 200 Yard Breaststroke and a meet record with a time of 2:11.70. In the 200 Yard Butterfly, Ohio's Rachel Heim won the event with a time of 2:00.28. In the 400 Yard Freestyle, the Toledo team of Katie White, Carly Harter, Kelsey Atchison, Jacy Dyer won the event with a finals time of 3:21.77. In the three-meter diving event, Buffalo's Meili Carpenter came in first with a final score of 350.65.

Miami had won the MAC Championship five times in the last eight years, and overall the RedHawks have won the championship 16 times. Ohio University have won the MAC Championship on 10 occasions, including their latest in 2008. Toledo joins Bowling Green (1981) and Eastern Michigan (2006-07) as the only MAC program's to win the conference championship.
