ACC Championships: Day Three

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, February 26. NORTH Carolina junior Tommy Wyher set two new Atlantic Coast Conference and pool records on the third day of competition at the 2010 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship at Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus. The University of Virginia still leads the team standings after three days and 14 events.

Wyher broke a pair of ACC and Koury Natatorium records and automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championship in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Wyher won his second consecutive 100 fly title in a time of 45.57, and his third straight 100 back crown in 46.08.

Cavalier senior Eric Olesen followed Wyher in second place in each of the 100 breast (47.30) and 100 back (47.29).

Virginia Tech freshman Greg Mahon placed third in the 100 fly (47.33), while Hokie sophomore Charlie Higgins took third in the 100 breast (47.55).

Virginia took a clean sweep in the 200-yard freestyle, as juniors Scot Robison (1:32.45) and Matt McLean (1:34.76), and senior John Azar (1:35.82) earned All-ACC honors in the event. Robison broke ACC and Koury Natatorium records–formerly held by McLean (1:32.80)–clocking a national qualifying "A" cut time to punch his ticket to the NCAA championship. McLean, the two-time defending champion in the 200 free, set the former record at last season's ACC championship.

In the first event of the evening, Georgia Tech senior Gal Nevo, last season's ACC Male Swimmer of the Year, an "A" cut time of 3:40.47 in the 400-yard individual medley. One night after winning his second straight 200-yard individual medley title, Nevo broke a pool record in taking the 400 IM crown, and finished more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Tyler Harris, a junior from North Carolina, who also automatically qualified for the NCAA championship with a 3:43.61 clocking. Virginia freshman Matt Houser came in third with a time of 3:47.80.

Florida State senior Scott Thacker claimed the first victory in the lanes for the Seminoles when he won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 53.59. Seminole junior Rob Holderness (53.82) and Virginia freshman Tom Casey (54.22) finished in second place and third place, respectively.

In the 400-yard medley relay, Olesen, Casey, sophomore Peter Geissinger, and Robison teamed to win Virginia's third straight 400 medley relay title with a pool-record time of 3:10.63.

After three days and 14 events, Virginia leads the team standings with 543.5 points. The Tar Heels sit in second place

With 444.5 points, and are followed by Florida State (369). Virginia Tech jumped to fourth place with 255.5 points after sitting in fifth place after Thursday's events, and Georgia Tech climbed two spots to fifth place with 224 points. Duke stands in sixth (223.5), and Clemson, which was in fourth place following day two of action, is in seventh place (184). Maryland (142), NC State (110), Boston College (53), and Miami (31), which only competes in diving events, round out the order.

The 2010 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship will continue tomorrow (Sat., Feb. 27) with preliminary events beginning at 11 a.m. and finals events following at 7 p.m. Tomorrow's event lineup includes the 100 and 1,650-yard freestyles, the backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly at 200 yards, and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
