Men’s NCAA Div. I Championships, Day 2: ‘Horns Take a Big Lead

COLLEGE STATION, Texas. March 23. THE UNIVERSITY of Texas Longhorns took a commanding lead at he end of the second day of competition at the men's NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

The Longhorns have 447.5 points, 110 more than Stanford, in second place. In a tight battle for third, Tennessee has 247.5 to 234 for USC and 231 for Auburn.

Texas won three of the six events contested this evening, setting American and NCAA records in one, and going one-two in another.

200 YARD MEDLEY RELAY
In prelims, the 'Horns set an American record of 1:25.26, just missing the NCAA mark by two-hundredths. They wanted to rectify that oversight in the evening, and wasted no time turning desire into reality.

The team of Matt Ulrickson (back, 21.63), Brendan Hansen (breast, 23.70), Nate Dusing (fly, 20.04) and Leffie Crawford (free, 19.10) blasted the old record, posting a mark of 1:24.47. Tennessee, which came into these Championships as the American record-holder, also swam well under the old record with a time of 1:24.75.

Actually, it was Texas A&M that led after the first 50, as Riley Janes posted the fastest backstroke split, 21.23. Tennessee was second on the strength of
Michael Gilliam's 21.28, and Texas was third.

The Vols took the lead on the second leg, lengthening their margin over Texas, as the Aggies fell back. Tennessee's Jeremy McDonnell split 23.41 for his 50 yards of breaststroke. Hansen, at 23.70, was the only other sub-24-second swimmer. At the halfway mark, the Vols led by 64-hundredths.

Then came Nate Dusing with his thundering 20.04 fly split and the 'Horns had hooked 'em. The Vols' Justin Hoggatt answered with a 20.76 split, second fastest overall and far from shabby, but Texas had a lead of eight hundredths.

Then the San Jose kid, Leffie Crawford, brought the screaming home crowd to its feet as he anchored in 19.10. And that, my man, was all she wrote. Renato Gueraldi clocked an impressive 19.30, but it was not enough to catch the flying 'Horns.

Cal's Anthony Ervin split 18.68–the fastest 50 relay split in the meet–to give the Golden Bears sixth place. Auburn's Greg Busse was second fastest with his 19.01.

400 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
In 1999, Michigan freshman Tim Sicilano won the 400 IM after a shoulder injury forced him to train entirely by kicking for several months. Last year, he won again, defeating USC frosh Erik Vendt wwho went on to win Olympic bronze in Sydney. This morning, Siciliano qualified first, Vendt second. Once again, it was Showdown Time!

And, oh, what a lovely war it was! Stanford's Steven Brown took the lead on the fly at 50.76, with Florida's Greg Reeves a scant tenth of a second behind.
Siciliano was third at 51.33, with Vendt sixth at 52.05.

Vendt passed Siciliano on the backstroke leg, splitting 55.35 to Siciliano's 56.49. But Reeves knocked down a 56.46.

At 200 yards it was tight as a clam, with only 1.5 seconds separating the top six places: Reeves, 1:47.32; Vendt, 1:47.40; Siciliano, 1:47.80; Brown, 1:48.03; Donnelly, 1:48.44; and Clements, 1:48.81. Kerekjarto and Warkentin were farther back.

But Siciliano and Vendt both are great back-half medley swimmers, distance guys who are particularly strong in the breaststroke. Siciliano uncorked a 1:02.58 breaststroke split, but Vendt was faster at 1:02.41. Fastest of all was Clements at 1:02.32. The others were well off that torrid pace.

At 300 yards,the six-man race had become a four-man battle. Vendt had the lead at 2:49.81. Six-tenths back at 2:50.40 stood Siciliano. Clements was hanging in at 2:51.13 while Reeves nursed his hopes at 2:52.00.

All in all, things looked good for Vendt. He was, after all, the first American to break 15 minutes in the 1500–a ferocious competitor who never gives in.

But it was Siciliano who reached down deep. Splitting 50.37 for the final 100 yards, he touched in 3:40.77. Vendt came home in 51.17 to finish in 3:40.98. Clements split 51.67 to touch in 3:44.27.

Siciliano's time makes him the second fastest performer all-time in this event, while Vendt ranks third. Unfortunately, Siciliano's time won't even stand as a Michigan school record. That mark–and the American and NCAA standard–is held by Tom Dolan: 4:38.18 from 1995.

In the team battle, Texas scored 9 points for 11th and 14th place, while Stanford notched 16 points with swimmers in fifth and 15th. USC was the big winner with 41 points while Florida scored 32.

100 YARD BUTTERFLY
The 'Horns made amends for their lackluster showing in the 400 medley by placing one-two-six in the 100 fly. Freshman Ian Crocker–American record-holder at 100 meters–led the way with a time of 45.96, just off the American record of 45.89 held by Ross Wales. He split 21.34 at the 50.

Crocker becomes only the third man to crack 46 seconds for the 100 fly. SMU's Lars Frolander, a Swede who won 2000 Olympic gold in the 100 meters fly in Sydney, holds the NCAA mark of 45.59.

Nate Dusing was second in 46.22. Arizona's Roland Schoeman, who led at the 50-yard mark in 21.20, was third in 46.53.

200 YARD FREESTYLE
USC freshman Klete Keller has an M.O.–a standard operating procedure–and he uses it all the time. He hangs back until the very end of his race, then whatever it takes to win, he does just that much–and nothing more.

Klete surprised the Big Boys at last year's Olympic Trials and, again, in Sydney, but by now, everyone knows what Klete's going to do. He did it last night to win the 500 free by four-hundredths of a second. And he did it again tonight to take the 200.

Keller (22.73) was sixth at the 50, as Stanford's Adam Messner led with a 22.04. At the 100, Keller moved up to fifth with a 46.92, as Messner turned in 46.16, lengthening his lead.

At the 150, with only 50 yards to go, Klete had moved up only to fourth, having only gained one-hundredth of a second on Messner, still the clear leader. Not to worry. While his coach, Mark Schubert, was clutching his chest on the sidelines, Keller, responding to his wake-up call, switched into high gear, splitting 23.41–more than half a second faster than anyone else
–to touch in 1:34.43. That gave him (what is for Klete) an enormous victory margin of 26-hundredths over Texas' Chris Kemp. Hey, Klete–you coulda backed off another quarter second there.

Messner faded to third (1:35.05) while Texas' Scott Goldblatt, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and top qualifier this morning, was sixth.

100 YARD BREASTSTROKE
Texas managed to qualify only one swimmer among the top 16 finalists in the 100 breast–and a freshman to boot. But that freshman made his presence felt.

Brendan Hansen, who finished third at last year's Olympic Trials in both the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke, qualified first in the 100 yard event this morning in 52.78. Tonight he came back to win it in convincing style. Turning in fifth place at the 50 (24.74) he passed every one of his foes on the second half to touch in 52.35.

Auburn senior Dave Denniston was second in 52.62, while 50 free champ, Stanford's Anthony Robinson, out fastest in 24.19, was third in 52.76. Auburn's Pat Calhoun, an Olympian last year in this event, was fourth (52.98).

100 YARD BACKSTROKE
Two years ago, Tennessee's Michael Gilliam won the 100 yard backstroke in an upset. Last year he was sixth. In this, his senior year, he wanted to go out a winner. And that's just what he did.

Seizing a commaning lead at the start, the Vol was so far ahead at the 50 there was no way anyone would catch him. Gilliam's 21.81 split was more than half a second faster than anyone else's.

Gilliam just maintained that lead coming home to dipunder the 46-second barrier with his 45.97.

Stanford frosh Peter Marshall was second in 46.23 while teammates Randall Bal was third (46.59), Markus Rogan tied for fifth (46.83) and Dan Westcott was seventh (46.84)
