Virginia 3A High School State Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, February 23. AT the Virginia 3A High School State Championships, Oakton and Robinson walked away with state titles. The Oakton boys tallied 202 points for first followed by Langley (173) and Fairfax (163). On the girls' side, Robinson won with 227.50 points while Langley took second (166) and Osbourn placed third (127).

Boys Results
Langley's Stephen Richards, Chuck Katis, Ryan Natal, and Chris Pivik set a state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.38. The previous record (1:48.65) was set by James Robinson in 2007. The team twice broke the national public school record in the event. Monarch High of Colorado held the record with a 1:46.81 set in 2004. Langley clocked a 1:46.43 in prelims before posting a 1:45.38 in finals.

Bradley Phillips (Oakton) was a dual event winner in the 200 and 400 freestyles. He set state records with times of 1:51.60 and 3:54.88, respectively. The previous record in the 200 freestyle (1:53.01) was set by McLean's Cameron Gledhill in 2007. In the 400 freestyle, Greg Long (South Lakes) was the previous record-holder with a time of 4:00.99 from 1998. Phillips' 400 free time also smashed the national public school record of 3:57.70 set by John Kennedy in 1988.

Fairfax's Joey Kelly won the sprint races with times of 23.67 (50 freestyle) and 52.09 (100 freestyle).

Kevin Vest, Dean Furst, Brady Baffer, and Michael Cestnut (Woodson) set a state record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.59. The previous record (1:37.08) was set by James Robinson in 2007.

KJ Park (Oakton) won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.59). He set a state record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.40. The previous record (2:05.53) was set by Andy Brake (Lake Braddock) in 2007.

Cory Bowersox (Robinson) won the diving competition with a score of 540.25 followed by Allandale's Sean McKinney (521.25) and Washington-Lee's Carl Buergler (475.75).

Philip Hu, Park, Chris Megaw, and Phillips had a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.44). They surpassed the previous national public school record (3:32.98) set by James Robinson in 2007.

Girls Results
Christine Canty, Rachel Canty, Becca Bott, and Kathleen Dodson (Robinson) won the 200 medley relay in 2:01.90.

Oakton's Kaitlin Pawlowicz was a dual event winner in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly (1:03.27). She set a state record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.39. The previous record (2:19.87) was set by Emily Verdin (T. Jefferson S&T) in 2003. Her time of 2:16.39 smashed the national public school record of 2:19.30 set by Ashley Evans in 2005.

Julianne Phillips (West Branch) had individual wins in the 50 (26.57) and 100 freestyles. She set a state record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.97. The previous record (57.17) was set by Amanda Kendall (James Robinson) in 2007.

Meghan Overend, Jayme Katis, Megan Howard, and Abi Speers (Langley) set a state record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.94). The previous record (1:49.04) was set by Yorktown in 2007. Yorktown's record also stood as the national public school standard.

Top finishers in the diving competition include Kelli Stockton (Fairfax) (445.10), Laura Gartrell (Robinson) (411.00), and Kelly Corish (Madison) (401.45).

Other first-place finishers include: Kaitlyn Schroeder (Atlee) in the 200 freestyle (2:02.95), Kasey Morris (Oscar Smith) in the 400 freestyle (4:14.90), Madison Hahn (Maury) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.76), and SinHye Won (West Springfield) in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.54). Morris' time crushed the national public school record of 4:19.14 set by Deirdre Ryan in 1989.

Osbourn's Casie Boyle, Heidi Turner, Kameron Ansley, and Haley Nowak closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.07).
