Speedo Eastern Championships: Etobicoke Relay Sets Canadian Age Group Record

OTTOWA, Canada, February 18. THE first day of short course meter action at the Speedo Eastern Championships held on Ottowa featured a Canadian age group record going into the books.

The Etobicoke team of Lauren Earp (1:59.54), Jacqueline Keire (1:58.94), Amanda Reason (2:00.96) and Brittany MacLean (1:58.54) broke the Canadian age group record in the girls 15-16 800 free relay with a 7:57.98 to win the overall relay event. That performance lowered the 8:01.06 also set by Etobicoke last year. Meanwhile, Etobicoke's Gleb Suvorov, Tory Jonathan MacLean, Aly Abdel-Khalik and Franco Petrone won the men's 800 free relay in 7:39.74.

Karyn Jewell opened the first day of swimming with a winning time of 16:32.08 in the women's 1500 free. Tatyanna Sarjeant claimed second overall with a 16:53.56, while Lindsay Charles took third in 17:00.60. Austin Rockett captured the men's 800 free title in 8:13.09. Daniel Jensen placed second in 8:15.83, while Xavier Desharnais completed the top three in 8:20.65.

In preliminary action, Paige Miller led the women's 50 fly with a 27.30, while Marc-Andre Benoit qualified first in the men's 50 fly with a 25.19. Ashley McGregor clocked a 31.52 for the top seed in the women's 50 breast, while Warren Barnes posted a 29.14 for the center lane in the men's 50 breast. Miller earned her second top seed with a 28.72 in the women's 50 back, while Ryan Cockell touched in 26.04 to lead the men's 50 back.
