Colorado Girls 4/5A High School State Championships

LOVELAND/FORT COLLINS, Colorado, February 17. AT the Colorado Girls High School State Championships, Cherry Creek and Thompson Valley walked away with state titles. At the 5A meet, Cherry Creek tallied 400 points for first, followed by Regis Jesuit (323) and Fairview (271). Thompson Valley won the 4A meet with 330 points while Rock Canyon took second (266) and Cheyenne Mountain placed third (175).

5A Results
Cherry Creek won all three relays. Bonnie Brandon, Christine Wixted, Kelly Naze, and Katie Naze posted a state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.88. Brandon won the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle with times of 2:02.09 and 4:51.56, respectively. In the 200 IM, she bettered last year's record (2:02.96) set by Caroline Piehl (Smoky Hill). Furthermore, she lowered the 2004 record (4:53.47) in the 500 freestyle set by Natasha Menezes (Cherry Creek).

Freshman Missy Franklin (Regis Jesuit) set a national independent high school record in the 100 freestyle as a leadoff swimmer for Regis' 400 freestyle relay. Franklin's time of 48.39 eclipsed Christine Swindle's time of 48.90. Franklin also set state records in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She clocked a time of 22.49 in the 50 freestyle, surpassing Becky Bicknell's (Denver East) 1994 record of 23.06. In the 100 backstroke, she finished first in 53.16. The previous record (54.77) was set last year by Brandon.

Jordan Mattern (Cherry Creek) was a dual event winner in the 200 and 100 (51.08) freestyles. She set a meet record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.82. The previous record (1:50.04) was set in 1992 by Cherry Creek alum Stephanie Northrup.

Top finishers in the diving competition include Loveland's Michal Bower (489.15), Arapahoe's Beth Ambrozic (442.35) and Loveland's Max Thorn (430.45).

Kelly Naze also set state records in the 100 butterfly (54.25) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.47). The previous records (55.16, 1:04.27) were set by Lisa Caprioglio (HighlandRch) in 2006 and Lauren Stoeckle (Regis Jesuit) in 2009, respectively.

Mattern, Kelly Naze, Brandon, and Katie Naze had a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.85. They lowered their school's state record set last year by 2.23 seconds.

4A Results
Thompson Valley won all three relays. They won with times of 1:50.77 (200 medley relay), 1:40.86 (200 freestyle relay), and 3:37.28 (400 freestyle relay).

Junior Ashley Forsyth (Cheyenne Mountain) was the only dual event winner of the meet. She won the 200 (1:54.39) and 500 (5:02.99) freestyles.

Other top finishers include: Lexie Malazdrewicz (Evergreen) in the 200 IM (2:09.15), Emily Stucky (Montrose) in the 50 freestyle (24.40), Sam Moss (Thompson Valley) in the 100 butterfly (59.10), Mackenzie Norlin (Windsor) in the 100 freestyle (52.97), Mary Saiz (Pueblo South) in the 100 backstroke (58.83), and Laura Day (Lewis Palmer) in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.35).

Windsor's Mikhaila Eckhardt won the diving competition with a score of 396.85. Moffat County's Genevive Bradley finished second (378.05) while Leanna Talarico (Broomfield) and Mikaela Hutchinson (Mullen) went head-to-head for third. Talarico came out on top by .25 points with a score of 355.90.
