NCAA Div. I Women: Auburn Holds A Tiny Lead After Day two in the Closest Women’s Championships in History

By Phillip Whitten

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. March 16. COACH DAVD MARSH'S Auburn Tigers held on to a tiny margin of four points at the end of the second day of competition at the Women's NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York.

With one day of swimming left to go, Auburn has 265 points to SEC-rival Georgia's 261. Stanford is breathing right on their heels with 254.5, while Texas (229.5) and Arizona (200) are close behind. It will all come down to who has the best stuff on the final day of the three-day meet.

Auburn has never won a women's NCAA title or even an SEC championship. Two weeks ago, Georgia won the SECs over Auburn after the Tigers led after Day One.

But while the team race is still up for grabs, one swimmer has emerged as the sport's new superstar: Cal's Natalie Coughlin. Coughlin, a freshman, had a spectacular day, holding off Stanford's Misty Hyman to win the 100 yard fly in an NCAA record 51.18, then coming back to break her own one-day-old American and NCAA mark in the 100 back with an awesome 51.23, almost two full seconds ahead of Hyman.

Hyman, who held the old 100 fly mark of 51.34, swam her second-fastest time ever for the event, 51.51. In the backstroke she clocked a pr 53.04, just ahead of Cal's Haley Cope.

200 YARD MEDLEY RELAY
Stanford won the evening's first event, the 200 medley relay, by the narrowest of margins, beating Cal by one-hundredth of a second and Texas by only three-hundredths. The Stanford squad of Shelly Ripple, Tara Kirk, Hyman and Siobhan Cropper clocked 1:38.43, bettering the American record of 1:38.56. However since Cropper is from Trinidad, the American mark went to the Cal team of Haley Cope, Stacianna Stitts, Coughlin and Michelle Harper in 1:38.44. Texas, at 1:38.46, also was under the old record.

Cal took the lead at the 50 on the strength of Cope's 24.57 backstroke leadoff leg, but Stanford took over in the troke when Tara Kirk split 27.20 Hyman folloowed with a 23.39 fly split, while Cropper anchored in 22.74.

Interestingly, the winning Stanford team could claim none of the fastest legs in the race. Cope was the fastest backstroker (24.57). Auburn frosh Laura Swander turned in the fastest breaststroke split (26.99). Cal's Coughlin was just five-hundredths quicker than Hyman in the fly (22.34), while Texas' Colleen Lanne had an awesome 21.46 freestyle split.

400 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
The 400 IM ran true to form, with Georgia's Keegan Walkley opening up a big lead at the halfway mark, only to be reeled in by Auburn's Maggie Bowen, winner of the 200 IM last night.

Bowen clocked 4:07.26 for the win, splitting 58.08 for the fly, 1:04.03 for the back, 1:08.64 for the breast, and 56.51 for the free.

Five women battled for the second spot, with USC's Michala Kwasny emerging triumphant (4:10.61) only a stroke ahead of Florida's Jaime Ellis (4:11.36), Walkley (4:11.41), Villanova's Maddy Crippen (4:11.50) and Virginia's Mirjana Bosevska (4:11.52) in a blanket finish.

100 YARD BUTTERFLY
The 100 fly was a two-woman race, with Coughlin jumping out to a three-tenths of a second advantage in the first lap, a lead she never relinquished.

Coughlin split 23.77 for the first 50, then came back in 27.41 to post her NCAA mark of 51.18, which was just shy of Jenny Thompson's American record of 51.07.

Hyman split 24.17 and 27.34 to finish in 51.51.

Third place went to Texas senior Shona Kitson, who notched an impressive 53.34.

Texas's Tanica Jamison was the consols winner in 53.70.

200 YARD FREESTYLE
The third time was golden for Arizona junior Sarah Tolar, who had finished second in the 200 free in her first two years at NCAA's. This time Tolar swam a perfect race to grab the brass ring.

Texas' Colleen Lanne, who came into the meet as the favorite, took the lead at the start, splitting 24.15 at the 50 and 50.41 at the 100. Stefanie Williams
of Georgia, the top qualifier, was second at 24.93 and 51.63. Tolar was back in the pack, fourth at the 50 (25.11) and 100 (51.84).

As she flipped at the halfway mark, Tolar turned on the jets, splitting 26.52 for the third 50. All of a sudden we had a race. At the 150, it was Lanne, 1:17.46 to Tolar's 1:18.36. Swimming next to the lane lines in the final 50 and drafting off her Texas rival, Tolar had just enough to overtake the leader, pulling ahead on the very last stroke to win in 1:45.21. Lanne followed in 1:45.27 while Wisconsin's Ellen Stonebraker moved into third (1:45.88).

Georgia's Maritza Correia, last year's champion, was a disappointing eighth in 1:47.45.

100 YARD BREASTSTROKE
Stanford frosh Tara Kirk stumbled in the prelims of the 100 breast, tying up in the second half and qualifying fourth. But by finals time, the pre-meet favorite got her act together and swam her characteristic lead-from-the get-go style.

Taking the lead by the first turn, Kirk split 27.90 at the 50, then powered home to touch in 59.18, the second fastest time in history and just 13-hundredths off Kristy Kowal's American record set in 1998.

Georgia's Ashley Roby, the top qualifier, became the fifth swimmer to braek one minute, as she finished in 59.91, just ahead of Penn State's Kristen Woodring in 59.96. It marked the first time three swimmers have broken a minute in the 100 breast in the same race; in fact, never before had two swimmers turned the trick in the same race.

100 YARD BACKSTROKE
Cal's super frosh, Natalie Coughlin, would not be denied in her best event: the 100 back.

Coughlin, who destroyed the American and NCAA records yesterday with her 51.66 relay leadoff, toyed with a brilliant field that included Misty Hyman; Haley Cope, who set a world record last year in the 50m back; and 1996 Olympic gold medalist Beth Botsford.

It would not have mattered who was in the pool, because the race belonged to Natalie. Blasting from the pads, she kicked 15 meters underwater, coming up with a two-foot lead over Stanford's Shelly Ripple, Cope and Hyman.

At the 50, Coughlin turned in 25.17, a bit slower than her 50 split of 24.99 yesterday when she set the American record. Still, the rest of the field was a full second back.

Skimming over the water, Cougfhlin came home in 26.06 to touch in 51.23, another American and NCAA record. Hyman edged Cope for second 53.04 to 53.06, with Ripple (53.25) right behind.

3-METER SPRINGBOPARD DIVING
The 3-meter diving featured a battle between two Olympians: Russia's Yulia Pakhalina (Houston)SA's Jenny Kim (Miami).

Pakhalina, who won the one-meter yesterday, had no trouble disposing of Kweim tonight, scoring 573.20 points, almost 30 more than Keim (544.30).

800 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
Stanford's stalwart women gave it their all in the 800 freestyle relay, leading for the first 700 yards. But Georgia's depth was just a little too much to overcome, as the Dawgs took the evening's final event.
The Georgia team of Stefanie Williams (1:46.64) Kim Black (1:47.50), Julie Hardt (1:46.48) and Maritza Correia (1:45.86) powered home in 7:06.48, a second ahead of Stanford's 7:07.64.

Stanford looked like it was going to pull off an upset after Jessica Foschi (1:46.56), Misty Hyman (1:45.97), and Shelly Ripple (1:46.01) had swum their legs. But Georgia's Correia made up for her disappointing swim in the individual 200 by ripping a 1:45.86 anchor while the Cradinal's Lauren Thies could manage only a 1:49.10.

Auburn was third in 7:09.66.

Correia tied with Arizona's Sarah Tolar, who won the individual 200 free, for the fastest split (1:45.86). Ariaona finished fourth in 7:11.49.
