Columbia vs. Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, February 3. THE Navy men's swimming and diving team concluded the dual meet portion of its season Friday by posting a pair of victories over Columbia and Johns Hopkins in Lejeune Hall. The Midshipmen improved their record on the year to 11-1 with a 156-136 victory over the Lions (6-3) and their 135.5-124.5 win over the Blue Jays (8-1).

"It was great to not only race in back-to-back meets, but also be as successful in both of them as we were," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "Today was something new, something different, and exciting. It also was great for the development of our team.

"A lot of different people won events today. There wasn't one person who carried us in either meet. As a coach, you want to see that depth and have multiple contributors to the success of the team."

The Mids began the day by winning 10 of the 16 contested events to post the victory over the Lions. Navy displayed great depth in the meet as eight different Mids won an individual event. The lone Navy swimmer to record a pair of individual event wins was Mac Anthony (Sr., Allentown, Pa.), who won the 200-m freestyle in a time of 1:50.72 and the 400-m free with a clocking of 4:02.03.

After the Mids won the opening 200-m medley relay, Justin Vagts (Jr., Crofton, Md.) recorded Navy's first individual event victory of the meet. He posted a time of 8:22.48 to win the 800-m freestyle by four-hundredths of a second over Columbia's Harry Stephenson. Anthony followed with his win by 1.32 seconds in the 200-m free. Then Columbia's Omar Arafa edged Navy's Zach Ingold (So., Hornell, N.Y.) by three-tenths of a second for the victory in the 100-m backstroke, but that was followed by Sean Murphy (So., Hudson, Ohio) winning the 100-m breaststroke (1:04.12) for Navy and teammate Mark Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) earning the victory in the 200-m butterfly (2:02.35).

Columbia then posted back-to-back victories in the ensuing two events. Alex Ngan won the 50-m freestyle by one-quarter of a second over Navy's Robbie Parker (Jr., Vienna, Va.) and Micah Rembrandt accrued 307.00 to win the one-meter diving event by 12 points over D.J. Principato (So., Easton, Pa.).
Ingold (51.68) and K.C. Linn (Sr., Newhall, Calif.) placed first and second, respectively, for Navy in the 100-m free, with Conor Campbell (So., Manassas, Va.) leading a 1-2-3 Navy finish in the 200-m backstroke with his winning time of 2:05.54. Luke Hoffer (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.) ran Navy's event winning streak to three as he posted a time of 2:18.17 to win the 200-m breaststroke by nearly three seconds over teammate Andrew Gsell (Sr., Mount Holly, N.J.). Anthony then capped Navy's run of success with his three-tenths of a second win in the 400-m free.

Columbia's David Jakl won the next event, the 100-m fly (55.98), Rembrandt scored 278.30 points to win the three-meter board and Navy's Ben Bondurant (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) won the 200-m individual medley. Bondurant, swimming in lane eight, led the final 150 yards and posted a time of 2:07.27 to win the race by well over three seconds.

The Lions then closed the meet by posting a time of 1:33.67 to win the 200-m freestyle relay by 2.5 seconds.
