Texas vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, January 28. TOP-ranked Arizona men's swimming remained undefeated with its trouncing of No. 2 Texas on Saturday in the Wildcats' last home meet of the season. The No. 9 women's team fell in a close decision to the No. 4 Longhorns. For 14 seniors, it was the last home meet of their careers.

The meet did not include the 100 breast, 100 fly, or the 100 back, three of Arizona's strongest events.

One of the highlights of the day came in diving competition, when sophomore Sam Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) not only won both boards, but broke Arizona's school record on the 3m.

In swimming competition, the men's and women's teams both came out strong in the beginning, taking first in their respective 400 medley relays.

The men's team went on to win seven of nine individual events. Seniors Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.), Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) and Cameron Owen (Fishers, Ind.) made the most of their last home meet with wins in their respective events. Chitwood won the 200 IM and the 200 back, Small won the 50 free and Owen won the 100 free.

Sophomore newcomer and Texas transfer Woody Joye (Coosada, Ala.) came up big with wins in the 200 free and 200 fly, while freshman Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ind.) won the 200 breast.

In addition, senior Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) won the 3m in the diving portion of the meet.

On the women's side, sophomore Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) won the 50 free and junior Lauren Smart (Charlotte, N.C.) won the 200 back.

Both teams closed out the meet with first and second-place finishes in the 400 free relay.

"I'm really happy for the kids," Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. "I think the women really swam well. Some of the holes were obvious, but it's our job to minimize those. All in all, I thought we swam really well and I think we are in a good place going into Arizona State and conference championships."

Arizona will close out its regular season on Saturday, Feb. 11, with a dual meet at Arizona State at 1 p.m.
