Indiana Announces Men’s Recruit Class

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, January 19. INDIANA University head swimming coach Ray Looze and head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber announced today that Murray Crabtree (Dyer, Ind./Munster), Cody Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde), Patrick Scally (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's), Darian Schmidt (Bloomington, Ind./South) and James Wells (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) have decided to continue their swimming/diving careers at Indiana University beginning in the fall of 2010.

Crabtree is an all-state and All-America honoree in the 400 free relay and earned honorable mention all-state status in the 100 backstroke in 2009. He helped lead Munster to a state runner-up finish in 2009 and top-six finishes in 2007 and 2008.

"Murray is one of the top Indiana high school backstrokers this season and we see him improving substantially as a Hoosier," said head swimming coach Ray Looze. "He is big and tall which bodes well in the Big Ten conference. The weight room will be his best friend."

Miller is a member of the 2009 USA Swimming National Youth Team, competing at World Cup Berlin and in Stockholm. At the 2009 Long Course Junior Nationals he finished second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and was the winner of the bonus final in the 200 breaststroke at the 2009 U.S. Open Nationals and 2009 World Championship Trials. Miller was champion of the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke at the 2008 Junior Nationals and finished sixth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2008 U.S. Short Course Nationals. For the 2008-09 season he was ranked No. 1 in his age group in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, as well as the 200-meter breaststroke. He is the USA Swimming 15-16 age group record holder in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.46). In the classroom he was a member of the 2009 Scholastic All-America Team.

"Cody is the top high school breaststroker coming out this year," Looze said. "He will fit in well with IU's strong recent history of breaststroke excellence. He is motivated to make U.S. National/Olympic teams and is excited about IU's current USA Swimming national team members."

Scally is a three-time Colorado 4A state champion, earning honors in the 400 free relay in 2008 and 2009, and the 500 free in 2009. He helped lead Cheyenne Mountain to a third-place finish at the state meet in 2009, and runner-up placings in 2007 and 2008. Scally holds school records in the 200 and 500 free, and is the club record holder in the 200-, 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter freestyles, as well as the 200-, 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles.

"Patrick is one of Colorado's top high school distance swimmers," Looze said. "He should contribute to IU at the Big Ten level as a freshman and has the potential to eventually make the NCAA Championships with hard work. He is passionate about the Hoosiers and a perfect fit for our program."

Schmidt finished third at the 2009 Indiana state meet on the 1-meter springboard, entering the state championships with an undefeated record. He was an AAU National Champion on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards and is coached at Bloomington South by former Hoosier diver Will Bohonyi.

"Darian is the most talented male diver to come out of our Indiana Diving age group program and I am excited to be working with him next year," said Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "Although he has not accomplished much to date, he has a very bright future ahead of him and he is excited to be a part of our program and wants to work very hard towards reaching his greatest potential and continuing the IU diving tradition. He has the ability to go all the way in our sport. I can't wait to coach him next fall."

Wells was a Class A Maine state champion as a freshman, sophomore and junior and was named the state Swimmer of the Meet and Swimmer of the Year as a junior. He is a five-time NISCA All-American and a three-time MVP at Morse High School. Wells is the Maine state record holder in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back and also holds school records in the 200 free and 200 IM. As a member of Long Reach Swim Club for nine years, Wells has accumulated 117 pool, team and state records during those years. Wells is a five-time YMCA National Champion and a three-time New England Champion.

"James is the top high school backstroker coming out this year," Looze said. "He will certainly fit right in with IU's great tradition of elite-level backstrokers. Another upside of Wells is his versatility. He can swim fly and sprint freestyle which will make him valuable on relays."
