Flanders Cup: Meet in Belgium Features International Flair

ANTWERP, Belgium, January 16. THE long course meter Flanders Cup held in Belgium featured a heavily international field with swimmers from all around the world competing, including Peter Vanderkaay of the United States.

Glenn Surgeloose won the men's 100 free in a time of 50.25, while Dieter Dekoninck finished second in 50.70. Jason Dunford completed the podium with a third-place 50.73. Lotte Friis cruised in the women's 200 free with a winning time of 2:01.40. Annelies De Mare placed second in 2:02.73, while Katrien Maes touched third in 2:06.26.

Raphael Stacchiotti earned the win in the men's 400 IM with a 4:30.02. Ken Cortens placed second in 4:37.23, while Mathieu Mattelaer snared third in 4:39.19. Elise Matthysen and Rikke Moeller Pedersen tied for the women's 100 breast title with matching 1:09.23s. Kim Janssens touched third in 1:09.94.

Dimitri Komornikov cleared 30 seconds in the men's 50 breast for the win with a 29.81. Bjorn Balliu took second in 30.02, while Jens Verheyen placed third in 30.43. DeMare moved from second in the 200 free to a win with a 25.99 in the women's 50 free. Jolien Sysmans took second in 26.27, while Nina Van Koeckhoven finished third in 26.33.

Aschwin Wildeboer snatched the men's 100 back title in 56.32, while Bruno Claeys wound up second in 56.91. Sander Helderweirt touched third in 57.78. Kimberly Buys cleared a minute in the women's 100 fly with a 59.10, coming close to her national record of 58.62. Jeanette Ottesen finished second in 1:00.12, while Marit Hofman claimed third in 1:04.96.

Egon Van Der Straeten topped the men's 200 fly in 2:00.94, while Louis Croenen placed second in 2:02.91. Francois Heersbrandt touched third in 2:03.09. Fanny Lecluyse cruised to victory in the women's 200 IM with a 2:18.10. Pedersen touched out Jolien Vermeylen, 2:22.22 to 2:22.33, to take second place.

Jonas Coreelman easily won the men's 200 breast in 2:17.50, while Raf Vandevelde held off Balliu, 2:20.84 to 2:20.98, for second place. Brenda Rodiers nabbed the women's 200 back title in 2:19.93, while Sarah Rolko placed second in 2:21.58. Joni Vanneste earned third in 2:25.14.

Vanderkaay rolled through the men's 1500 free with a 15:25.58 with Ward Bauwens taking a distant second in 15:32.18. Tom Vangeneugden completed the top three in 15:39.30. Friis earned her second victory of the night with an 8:47.22 in the women's 800 free. Gala Kenis finished second in 9:07.15, while Katrien Maes took third in 9:07.32.

Dunford shined in the men's 50 fly with a 23.81, while Heersbrandt took second in 23.94. Evgeny Korotyshkin placed third in 24.19. Silke Van Hoof touched out Buys, 29.91 to 29.98, in the women's 50 back.
