FINA Bureau Votes to Keep Swimming World Records

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 15. THE FINA Bureau has decided to keep the swimming world records untouched, according to a report on SwimNews.com.

One of the major discussions taking place at the FINA Bureau meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, revolves around the world records set between February 2008 and December 2009, when the high-tech suits were prominent in swimming, and more than 250 world records were set. Many recommendations to the FINA Bureau suggested that either two world record lists be created –- one with records before 2008 and another listing records during the high-tech suit era — or that the record list revert to the times set before 2008.

Both recommendations were apparently denied, but the issue is not off the table, according to SwimNews.com. FINA will revisit the issue at future meetings this year.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, all swimmers had to conform to new swimsuit rules that only allowed suits to be made of textile materials. Men's suits could only go from the navel to the knee, and women's suits could go from the shoulder to the knee.
