Washington vs. Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana, January 15. THE sixth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team picked up a 193-94 victory over No. 25 Wabash College on Wednesday night in Crawfordsville, Ind. With the win the Bears' dual-meet record improves to 3-1 during the 2009-10 season.

Washington U. was victorious in 13 of the 16 events on Wednesday night and the Bears had seven different student-athletes submit first-place finishes in individual events.

Senior Alex Beyer won three races against Wabash, the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.01), the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.43) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:06.94), with his time in the 400-yard IM eclipsing NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying standards. Beyer also teamed with junior Kartik Anjur, freshman Brendan Morin and junior David Chao to grab first in the 200-medley relay (1:37.31).

Sophomore John Rao and junior Michael Flanagan also turned in multiple first-place performances in the WU win. Rao won the one-meter diving (186.75) and three-meter diving (177.94) events, while Flanagan swept both butterfly races, winning the 100-butterfly with a time of 52.47, and the 200-butterly in 1:55.44.

Rounding out the Bears' top swims was Chao, who won the 100-yard freestyle (47.78), senior Brian Kushner, taking first in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:55.55), senior Dan Arteaga, who won the 50-yard freestyle (22.10), and sophomore Chris Valach, who submitted a time of 4:53.01 in winning the 500-yard freestyle.

Valach, freshman Mark Minowitz, Kushner and Arteaga comprised the Bears' first-place 400-freestyle relay team (3:19.01).

The Washington University men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, when they open competition in the Washington University Invitational. Friday night's session at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo., begins at 6 p.m.
