Colgate vs. Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, November 13. THE Bucknell men's swimming and diving team improved to 5-1 this season with an easy 160-52 victory over Colgate Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison won 11 of the 12 events with Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) each posting multiple wins.

Nicholson, a freshman who now has nine first-place finishes to his credit this season, captured both the 400-yard individual medley and the 200 breaststroke in season-best times. In fact, he won the two races by a combined 9.51 seconds. He won the 400 IM in 4:03.78, 4.76 seconds ahead of runner-up Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Nicholson followed that with a 4.75-second victory in the 200 breast, timing in at 2:07.63. His time in the 400 IM moved him up from eighth to fifth in the Bison record books.

Podniesinski also posted season-best times in the 1,000 free and 500 free. His time of 9:50.15 in the 1,000 free was his best this year, while his 4:45.96 in the 500 led a 1-2-3 Bucknell sweep of the event.

Sokolosky excelled in the shorter freestyle events, winning the 50 free (21.01) and 100 free (46.75). Both were season-best times. The second Bison finisher in both events was freshman Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who was making his debut with the swimming and diving team this year. He also plays water polo at Bucknell and the squad had the weekend off in preparation for the Eastern Championship, so he was able to swim on Saturday.

Like Nicholson, Segar easily won his races as he claimed the 200 free in 1:42.38, nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Matt Hadley (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Segar followed that with a win in the 200 fly, beating out Colgate's Costas Hadjipateras by .82 seconds, and third-place Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) by more than two ticks of the clock.
The Bison collected at least two top-three finishes in each event, except one-meter diving, where David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) was the only competitor for either team. Bucknell swept the top three spots in three events (200 free, 200 back, 500 free).

The Bison will be back in action next weekend at the Rutgers Invitational, Nov. 19-21.
