Delaware vs. Towson

NEWARK, Delaware, January 9. THE University of Delaware men's swimming and diving team posted a 228-70 victory over Towson, while the women fell to the Tigers, 176-124, during a Colonial Athletic Association meet at the Rawstrom Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The meet was highlighted by a strong performance from junior Craig Young, who captured four events, including three individual titles. On the women's side, the Blue Hens were guided by a pair of victories from both Courtney Raw and Hannah Facchine.

Young led the Blue Hen effort as the standout swimmer won four total events. On an individual level, he snatched both backstroke titles as well as the 200-individual medley. In the 100-back, he paced the field with a time of 52.11 before taking the 200-yard event in 1:52.44. Then, he touched the wall first in the medley after posting a time of 1:56.52.

Earlier in the meet, Young also swam the lead leg on Delaware's victorious 200-medley relay squad. During that competition, he teamed with Ross Buckwalter, Hans Gillan, and Grady Carter to capture the title after finishing in 1:34.08.

Buckwalter and Gillan both returned to the pool to win individual events after their relay title. Buckwalter captured the 100-breaststroke in 58.87, while Gillan won the 100-freestyle and 100-butterfly. He posted a time of 46.49 in the free before clocking in at 50.49 in the fly.

Freshman Ryan Roberts also had an outstanding day after winning three events, including two individual titles. He took the 200-free in 1:43.51 and the 500-freestyle in 4:42.52. Later, he capped the meet by teaming with Carter, Gillan, and Robert MacLeish to win the 400-freetsyle relay with a time of 3:10.05.

In other events on the men's side, Andrew Speese cruised to the title in the 200-butterfly with a time of 1:54.25, Dominic Pavlik captured the 200-breaststroke crown after finishing in 2:10.99, and Matthew Ryan earned the top spot in the 1-meter board with a score of 279.30.

On the women's side, Facchine had an outstanding day as she won a pair of events and placed second in two others. She earned her lone individual title after posting a time of 1:06.03 in the 100-breaststroke. She also served alongside Raw, Elise Kanegawa, and MaryKathryn Harris on the team's victorious 200-medley relay squad that finished in 1:48.28.

During the meet, Facchine also was the runner-up in both the 200-breaststroke and 200-individual medley. She was the top Delaware finisher in both events after touching the wall in 2:22.18 in the breaststroke and 2:11.70 in the IM.

Raw also won an individual title after serving on the top medley relay squad. The freshman speedster paced the field in the 100-backstroke after completing the course in 58.88.

Cortney Barry rounded out the Delaware victors after capturing the title in the 1000-freetsyle. During the event, she edged out teammate Lauren Guntner after clocking in at 10:26.28.

Donna Healy also had a nice performance during the meet after earning two second-place finishes and a third-place showing. She was the top UD finisher in the 100-freestyle after placing second in 53.29. Later, she swam the lead leg on the runner-up 400-freestyle relay squad and placed third in the 200-free with a time of 1:55.30.

Delaware will return to action next Saturday when the team hosts Drexel at 1 p.m. on Senior Day at the Rawstrom Natatorium.
