Swim Coach Sets Guinness World Record in Effort to Raise Money for Swim Team

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 6, 2010. DAVID Scherer, an assistant coach for the Swimming Eagles in Ft. Campbell, Ky., broke a Guinness World Record Tuesday in an effort to raise money for a permanent training facility for his team.

Scherer, 19, played the video game Grand Theft Auto IV continuously for 55 hours and 30 minutes, which beat the former record by more than 14 hours. In an article appearing in the Leaf-Chronicle today, Scherer said he pursued the record after discovering that he could beat the time of 40 hours, 20 minutes, set by India's Chirantan Patnaik. Soon after, he decided to ask for donations as a way to help his team earn some money to build a pool that could serve as their permanent base.

Scherer said his team has to hold practice sessions at several area pools. The Swimming Eagles is a nonprofit, parent-run team.
