Brazil Long Course Championships: Tatiana Barbosa Sets Brazilian Record, Cesar Cielo Shines in Prelims

SAO PAULO, Brazil, December 17. THE first session of swimming at the Brazilian Long Course Championships came to a conclusion with a national record falling by the wayside.

In preliminary swimming, Tatiana Barbosa lowered the Brazilian record in the women's 100 free with a 54.93. That swim beat her previous mark of 55.01 set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She came back to win the event in finals with a 55.01.

Cesar Cielo gave his world record a run in the men's 100 free prelims before scratching in finals. Cielo topped qualifying with a scorching time of 47.13. He owns the global standard with a 46.91 from the World Championships in Rome. Nicolas Oliveira won the Cielo-less finale with a 48.61.

After setting the meet record with a 28.20 in prelims, Fabiola Molina captured the women's 50 back crown in 28.27. Meanwhile, Guilherme Guido twice progressed the meet record in the men's 50 back with a 25.07 during prelims and a 24.76 to win the finale.

Tatiane Sakemi lowered the meet record in the women's 200 breast with a 2:31.04 during prelims. She returned in finals with a 2:32.87 for the win. The men's 200 breast also featured a faster prelim swim with Thiago Pereira clocking a 2:11.72 in qualifying. He finished third in finals with a 2:13.77. Henrique Barbosa (2:11.72) and Tales Cerdeira (2:11.76) took first and second in front of Pereira.

In timed finals action, Joanna Maranhao won the women's 200 IM in 2:12.56, just off her national record of 2:12.12 set in Rome this summer. Pereira picked up the men's 200 IM crown in 2:02.46. Luiz Arapiraca snatched the men's 1500 free title in 15:19.38.
