Michael Phelps Takes Fourth in AP Athlete of the Decade Voting

BALTIMORE, Maryland, December 17. THE Associated Press announced its Athlete of the Decade yesterday, with the award going to the now under-siege Tiger Woods. Michael Phelps finished fourth overall in the voting behind Lance Armstrong and Roger Federer.

Woods, who has admitted to infidelity after his good guy public persona vanished in the past few weeks, still had a strong enough run of performances to overcome those personal issues and win the award. Woods claimed 56 of the 142 votes in the balloting process.

Armstrong, who won six Tour de Frances this decade, finished second with 33 votes. Federer, a tennis phenom, had third with 25 votes, while Phelps took fourth with 13 votes.

Additionally, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady placed fifth with six votes, while track and field sprint king Usain Bolt took sixth with four votes.
