U.S. Women’s Water Polo Ties Australia, 7-7, at Holiday Cup

NEWPORT BEACH, California, December 13. THE United States and Australia remained undefeated following a 7-7 tie to close out night four of the Holiday Cup. In earlier action Russia defeated Italy 13-6 and Canada and the Netherlands ended in a 7-7 draw. All the teams will be back in action tomorrow on the final day of the Holiday Cup, which will be webcasted live at waterpolo.teamusa.org/live. Currently Australia sits atop the standings at 3-0-1 with Team USA on their heels at 2-0-2. Next is Canada at 2-1-1, followed by the Russia at 1-1-2 and the Netherlands at 0-1-3, while Italy is 0-4-0.

Australia had a strong first quarter to start. The Aussies scored first, only to be followed by a Forel Davies (Carlsbad, CA) goal too make it 1-1. Australia scored two late goals in the final minute to grab a 3-1 lead after the first. In the second the United States battled back with two straight goals from Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA) and Jillian Kraus (Santa Ana, CA) to tie the game at 3-3. Australia went up 4-3 but that was countered by another Davies score at the 1:34 mark in the half to tie the game at 4-4 headed to the half.

Out of the gate in the third quarter Team USA grabbed teh lead on a score from Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA) and it was 5-4 in favor of the red, white, and blue. Australia then ripped off two straight scores to grab a 6-5 lead, but with :52 remaining in the period Erika Figge (Santa Margarita, CA) found the cage for a power play goal to tie the score at 6-6.

The fourth quarter started off well for Australia when Bronwen Knox found the net for a 7-6 lead at the 6:48 mark. Fast forward to 2:41 remaining in the period and Team USA answered with a score from Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA) to knot the match at 7-7. Final chances for each team proved fruitless as the score ended in a 7-7 tie.

Emily Feher (Santa Ana, CA) posted five saves while Victoria Brown tallied six saves for the match.
