Missouri Invite: Day Two

COLUMBIA, Missouri, December 6. THE Tigers remain in the lead after day two of the Mizzou Tiger Invite over Drury University. Mizzou has 807.5 points at the end of the day while Drury has 630 points in second and Southern Illinois-Carbondale with 422 points in third.

"I was very pleased with the way the guys came out today and competed," Tiger coach Brian Hoffer said. "A lot of our young guys showed a wealth of potential today, and it's always good to see that."

The men's 200 medley relay team of Jan Konarzewski, Joe Hladik, Anders Melin and Jordan Hawley continued their relay success on Saturday, winning the event in 1:30.16. The team of John Higgins, Michael Lopresti, Scott Martin and Matt Burns finished fourth in 1:33.54.

The diving team swept the top three spots in the 3-meter dive, with Greg DeStephen winning with 420.75 points, Dante Jones finishing second with 365.15 points and Dallas Becerra taking third with 332.35 points.

The 800 free relay group of Ryan and Cameron Sellers, Hendricks and Yaniv Schnaider finished second in the last race of the day, but hit the "B" cut mark with their time of 6:41.34.

Konarzewski won the first individual title for the men's squad by winning the 100 back, clocking in at 48.19 seconds, while five Tigers occupied the spots from third to seventh place.

Konarzewski, Melin and Hawley finished in second, third and fourth in the 100 fly, finishing in 49.01, 49.64 and 49.78 seconds respectively. Martin Scott rounded out the "A" final in eighth place clocking in at 50.80 seconds.

Yaniv Shnaider finished second in the 400 IM finishing in 3:52.73, breaking a meet record in the process. Hladik won the 100 breast in 56.32 seconds, while Lopresti finished eighth in 57.69 seconds.

Jeff Hendricks took third in the 200 free race in 1:39.89, while Cameron Sellers took sixth in 1:41.27.

Mizzou finished day two of competition still in the lead over Arizona State in the Mizzou Tiger Invite. The Tigers and Sun Devils have a commanding lead over the field as the Tigers sit in first with 785.5 points while ASU has 602 points and Nebraska in third with 378 points.

"I thought we came out with really good energy this morning and was happy that it transferred to the night events," head coach Brian Hoffer said. "It's always good to see your team stepping up the way they did tonight."

After setting a "B" qualifying mark the day before, the 800 free relay group set another one when Kim Jasmer, Colleen Gordon, Stephanie Rovig and Frances Szostak finished first in 7:20.41, which was also a meet record.

In the 200 medley relay, the group of Cassie Cunningham, Rachel Ripley, Gordon and Szostak finished first in 1:42.69, .07 seconds ahead of teammates Lauren Lavigna, Morgan McCleery, Jasmer and Lisa Nathanson who finished in second place.

Dominique Bouchard finished first in the 100 back, setting a meet record in 54.76 seconds and was just .02 seconds from breaking a school record. Lavigna finished third in 55.29 seconds and Cunningham who finished fifth in 55.87 seconds.

Jasmer took the 200 free title in 1:47.69 for her first individual win of the day, while Szostak took third in 1:50.88.

Ripley finished second in the 100 breast in 1:03.01, with McCleery finishing fourth in 1:03.79.

Gordon and Molly Bollen finished second and third in the 100 fly, finishing in 55.60 and 55.62 seconds respectively. Cunningham rounded out the scoring for Missouri by finishing in seventh place in 57.09 seconds.

The team will complete the Mizzou Invite tomorrow at 10 a.m.
