Texas Invite: Jean Basson, Kathleen Hersey Post A Cuts

AUSTIN, Texas, December 5. THE final night of short course yard swimming featured a pair of NCAA Division I A cuts at the Texas Invite.

Arizona's Jean Basson kept up his impressive meet with another NCAA Division I A cut. This time, he checked in with a 14:50.32 in the men's 1650 free for the win. Longhorn's Michael Klueh finished second in 14:53.73, while Texas' Jackson Wilcox took third in 15:16.85.

Texas' Leah Gingrich won the women's 1650 free in a time of 16:14.26, while Arizona's Susana Helms took second in 16:21.77. Texas' Susana Escobar placed third in 16:32.72.

Arizona's Ana Agy touched out teammate Hannah Ross, 1:54.43 to 1:54.68, in the women's 200 back. Texas' Kathleen Hersey wound up third in 1:55.20. Arizona also went 1-2 in the men's 200 back with Cory Chitwood cruising to the title in 1:41.65. Teammate Jake Tapp took second in 1:43.63. Austin Surhoff claimed third in 1:44.21.

Texas' Karlee Bispo snatched the women's 100 free crown in 48.78, while Arizona's Justine Schluntz placed second in 48.94. Tucson Ford's Lacey Nymeyer finished third in 49.14. Arizona's Jordan Smith held off Texas' Jimmy Feigen, 43.27 to 43.47, in the men's 100 free. Arizona's Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or earned third in 43.63.

Auburn's Micah Lawrence won the women's 200 breast in 2:11.90. Texas' Laura Sogar (2:12.13) and Alexi Spann (2:12.69) completed the podium. Arizona went 1-2-3-4 in the men's 200 breast. Clark Burckle won in 1:55.54, while Jack Brown (1:55.98), Marcus Titus (1:56.24) and Kevin Munsch (1:57.20) touched second through fourth.

Hersey returned in the women's 200 fly with a winning time of 1:54.52, which cleared the NCAA Division I A cut. Gingrich finished second in 1:55.41, while Arizona's Alyssa Anderson claimed third in 1:56.30. Arizona's A.J. Tipton just missed the A cut in the men's 200 fly with a winning 1:43.00. Texas' Ricky Berens placed second in 1:44.98, while Arizona's Jordan Slaughter earned third in 1:45.02.

Arizona's Leone Vorster, Schluntz, Andrea Boritzke and Monica Drake won the women's 400 free relay in 3:17.07. Texas' Brie Powers, Bispo, Katie Riefenstahl and Hersey touched second in 3:17.86. Arizona's B team of Genny Konicke, Agy, Anderson and Jenny Forster wound up third in 3:20.85.

Arizona's Rob Iddiols, Shapira Bar-Or, Smith and Cameron Owen snagged a close victory in the men's 400 free relay with a 2:53.41. Texas' David Walters, Dax Hill, Feigen and Berens took second in 2:53.73. Arizona's B squad of Brown, Tapp, Craig Jordens and Joel Greenshields placed third in 2:55.69.

In platform diving action, SMU's Audra Egenholf won with 298.30 point among the women. Texas' Maren Taylor took second with 269.70, while UCLA's Laura Winn placed third with 236.35 points. Matt Cooper (433.10) and Drew Livingston (360.25) gave Texas a 1-2 finish among the men, while Wyoming's Mark Murdock garnered third with 355.15 points.
