Spanish Short Course Championships: Four More National Records Tumble

CASTELLON, Spain, November 29. THE final session of swimming at the Spanish Short Course Championships featured four more events with new national records.

Marco Rivera Miranda put together a swift time of 7:39.29 in the men's 800 free to crush his national record in the distance event. That performance smashed his 7:45.50 set last year. Patricia Castro Ortega followed in the women's 200 free with a national record time of 1:55.64. That readout clipped her Spanish standard of 1:55.85 set last year.

Lydia Morant Varo destroyed the women's 200 fly national record with a time of 2:04.30. That effort erased the 2:06.50 set by Marce Duane De Rocha in February. Hector Monteagudo Espinosa twice eclipsed the national record in the men's 50 breast. He first beat Melquiades Alvarez Caraballo's record of 27.12 with a 26.90 during prelims. He then returned in finals with a triumphant time of 26.81.

Miguel Rando Galvez posted a 1:52.70 in the men's 200 fly to set a meet record. He cleared the previous mark of 1:54.12 set by Jorge Sanchez Balsas back in 2002. Concepcion Badillo Diaz twice lowered her meet record of 31.62 in the women's 50 breast. First, she touched in 31.48 in prelims before winning the event in 31.36.

Mireia Belmonte Garcia touched in 4:27.24 in the women's 400 IM for a meet record. She first set the record in prelims with a 4:31.32 to crush her 2006 meet record of 4:38.33.

In other action, Tiago Venancio won the men's 50 free in 21.71.
