Eindhoven Cup: Second Day of Shootouts Concludes Long Course Meet

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, November 29. THE final day of long course meter swimming came to a close at the Eindhoven Cup with some more exciting sprint shootouts mixed in with some longer distance competition.

Moniek Nijhuis might have swam slower at the women's 50 breast tourney progressed, but her 32.03 in the shootout finale was good enough to beat Kim Janssens' 32.19. Nijhuis started the day with a 31.87 before clocking a 31.90 in the quarterfinals. She also clocked a 32.11 in semis. William Maynard clipped Devi Wolthuizen by the slimmest of margins in the men's 50 breast, 29.75 to 29.76. Maynard had gone faster with a 29.55 in the semifinal round.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo defeated teammate Inge Dekker, 24.68 to 25.23, in the women's 50 free shootout, while Fred Bousquet downed Sabir Muhammad, 22.10 to 22.95, in the men's 50 free.

In more orthodox competition, Hannah Miley captured the women's 200 fly in 2:13.46, while Joeri Verlinden claimed the men's 200 fly title in 1:59.55. Femke Heemskerk topped the women's 200 back in 2:14.17, while Arkady Vyatchanin touched in 1:59.14 for the men's 200 back crown.

Miley overtook Irish youngster Sycerika McMahon, 4:18.36 to 4:18.79, in the women's 400 free. Meanwhile, Sebastiaan Verschuren had a close victory of his own against Joshua Walsh, 3:56.08 to 3:56.73, in the men's 400 free. Sarah Mommers (18:08.85) won the women's 1500 free, while Job Kienhuis snatched the men's 800 free in 8:03.56.
