NCAA Div. I Men: Eastern Michigan Leads MAC Champs After First Day -- March 2, 2001

OXFORD, OH., March 1. USING its superior depth, Eastern Michigan's Eagles have soared to a narrow 272.50-265 opening day lead in the Mid-America Conference Championships at the University of Miami here today.

The Eagles won only one event, the 400 medley relay in an NCAA "B" time of 3:18.05, and backstroker Kevin Doak had the fastest leadoff split with a 49.67. EMU scored a 4-7 finish in the 500 free; a 4-5 and 8th-place in the 200 IM and a 3,5, 7 finish in the 50 free.

Coach Brian Gordon's Miami Redskins won three individual events, with John Carroll sweeping to the 500 free title in 4:28.39; teammate Eric DiSalle leading a one-two-three sweep of the 200 IM (1:49.07, followed by Brad Bartel's 1:50.87 and John Kirk's 1:51.53); and Wil Sensenbrenner winning the 50 free in 19.97 after a pr 19.94 200 free relay leadoff. Miami's Dylan Nichol won the 1-meter diving event with a 292.20 total.
