Denison vs. Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio, November 7. PACED by some solid swims from junior Collin Ohning (Greenville, SC/Christ Church Episcopal) and freshman Ian Stewart-Bates (Moreland Hills, OH/University School), the Kenyon College Lords cruised to a 145-92 victory over Denison. The Denison women extracted a bit of revenge by knocking off the host Ladies 139-104. The dual meet victory over the Ladies was the Big Red's first since the 2005-06 campaign.

For the men, the Lords swept all 11 swimming events at the Kenyon Aquatic Center and left Denison with just two diving event wins.

Ohning swam the breaststroke leg in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay. He joined Michael Mpitsos (Newport, OR/Newport), Jimmy Chapman (Sandusky, OH/Perkins), and Zachary Turk (Strongsville, OH/St. Edward) to post a winning and NCAA 'B' time of 1:33.50. Ohning then flew solo for individual event wins in the 50-yard freestyle (21:36) and the 100-yard breaststroke (58:71).

Stewart-Bates matched Ohning's win total by turning in the meet's best times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.80) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.33). His third and final win came in the 400-yard freestyle relay. He swam leadoff in the relay and was followed up by Curtis Ramsey (Wilmington, DE/Charter School of Wilmington), Blair Withington (Hastings, New Zealand/Hasting Boys'), and David Somers (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard). They finished with a winning NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:07.04.

Somers, Mpitsos, and Chapman were all double winners for Kenyon. In addition to participating on a winning relay team Somers won the 100-yard freestyle (46.69), Mpitsos took the 100-yard backstroke (51:38), and Chapman was the fastest in the 100-yard butterfly (51.82). Mpitsos' time was the only one of the three that came under the NCAA 'B' cut.

On the women's side, Denison first-year Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) led DU with three victories. Swanson was victories in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.18, and touched in at 52.51 as she captured first in the 100 free. The rookie later teammed up with classmate Kristi Walter (Ooltewah, Tenn./Girls Preparatory School), and sophomores Marit Wangstad (Wayzata, Minn./The Blake School) and Hilary Callen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) to win the 400 free relay with a time of 3:33.32. Callen also captured an individual title in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:23.08.

Senior Olivia Zaleski (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) also notched a pair of victories to aid the Big Red. Zaleski was victorious in the 50 free with a time of 24.29, just 28-hundreths of a second ahead of Kenyon's Megan Quinn. The senior touched in a 58.06 en route to winning the 100 backstroke. Additionally, sophomore Gail Blachly (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) turned in a time of 1:06.77 to claim victory in the 100 breast.

Junior Samantha Salas (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) swept the diving portion of the dual meet. Salas won the one-meter diving with a final score of 185.16, and followed that up with 198.60 points in the three-meter.

The Big Red are now 3-0 on the season and in NCAC action. Denison returns to action on Dec. 3 when they travel to the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.

The Lords, now 1-1, will next travel to Oxford, Ohio on Saturday to take on the Division I Miami University RedHawks beginning at 2 p.m.
