Wayne State vs. Oakland

ROCHESTER, Michigan, October 29. VANESSZA Balogh won two individual events and a relay and ScottYarbrough won two individual events and a relay as the Oakland men's andwomen's swimming and diving teams both won their home opening meet againstWayne State Saturday afternoon in the OU Aquatic Center. The men won with a score of 175-118 and thewomen won with a score of 174-121.

"We saw someprogress today and that is what we really wanted," said head men's and women'sswimming and diving coach Pete Hovland. "Being at home, receiving our championship rings and with it also being parent'snight really inspired us today."

Balogh won the 100-and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 1:05.07 and 2:19.70,respectively and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team, with ChristineSeiple, Sandra Czerska and Alyssa Vela with a time of1:47.54. Balogh also had the fastesttime in the 200 individual medley with a 2:07.81.

The OU women had eightindividual winners in the meet including Vela (50 free, 23.91), Czerska (500free, 5:05.32), Julieanne Stears (1,000 free, 10:28.72), Emily Ludema(200 butterfly, 2:09.24) and Nicole Salmeto (100 fly, 58.73). Oakland also swept the diving events as MarcellaBarretta won the three-meter diving with a score of 301.43, hitting a NCAAdiving zone cut and Tricia Grant won the one-meter event with a score of279.08 also a NCAA diving zone cut.

"We swam Vanessza(Balogh) in some different events today and whenever she hits the water shegives it her all and it was fun to watch," added Hovland. "We are a very balanced team and it was acomplete performance today but we still have work to do to get better."

Yarbrough won the100 and 200 breast with times of 59.01 and 2:09.17 respectively and helped winthe 200 medley relay with Tobias Hansen, Alex Aceino and GrantHarding with a time of 1:33.57.

OU had twomultiple-event winners as Amr el Sayed won the 200 and 500 free eventswith times of 1:40.27 and 4:34.91, respectively and Anders Jensen wonthe 100 and 200 fly with times of 51.14 and 1:54.74 respectively. Nick Evans also won the 1,000 free(9:34.32), Harding won the 200 back (1:56.53) and Hansen won the 100 back(51.05).

"No matter whatevent we put Anders (Jensen) in, you can see the level of ability he has," saidHovland. "We are pretty deep just about everywhereand some individual talent showed as the kids were fired up all day before themeet."

Oakland will beback in the pool next weekend as both teams take on Wright State on Saturday inthe OU Aquatic Center starting at 2 p.m. Admission to the meet is free to OU students with a valid ID. Generaladmission tickets will be on sale at the gate for $5 for adults and $3 forchildren.
