Indiana, Michigan vs. Texas, Day Two

AUSTIN, Texas, October 31. AFTER assuming commanding leads on day one of its double-dual meets against Indiana and Michigan, Texas finished what it started and pulled away to victories over the Hoosiers and Wolverines Saturday at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Texas defeated Indiana by a 222-162 margin and knocked off Michigan by a 235-149 count. Indiana defeated Michigan, 215-174.

UT sophomore Leah Gingrich opened the final session for the Horns with a second-place, NCAA "B" cut of 16 minutes, 38.06 seconds in the 1,650 freestyle. Sophomore Kathleen Hersey added another NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1:56.90 for second place in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Katie Riefenstahl added a second-place showing in the 100 freestyle in 51.15.

Freshman Laura Sogar led a solid Texas showing in the 200 breaststroke by taking first in a NCAA "B" cut of 2:15.41. Freshman Spindrift Beck took third in 2:18.22, and senior Alexi Spann placed fourth in 2:19.42. Hersey notched her second consecutive NCAA "B" cut and claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:56.98. Gingrich added a NCAA "B" cut of 1:59.43 for second place, and freshman Caroline McElhany took fourth in 2:02.53.

Freshman Maren Taylor led the Horns in the platform diving event by taking second with 265.55 points. Texas finished off the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as Adams, junior Brie Powers, Hersey and Riefenstahl finished in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 3:22.96.

Texas resumes competition on Friday, Nov. 6 when it hosts Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. The meet gets underway at 6 p.m. Central at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
